Does anyone have any suggestions of where we can go on holiday in Italy? We are a couple, both 24, looking to go for a week in September. We don't want to stay in a big city and would ideally like to be near the sea but somewhere where there's things to explore and lovely restaraunts. I've been looking at Sorrento but it seems very expensive - does anyone know anywhere nice and cheap to stay in there or have any alternative suggestions?

We've just come back from a short trip to the Ligurian coast which is also pretty stunning scenery wise. If you like walking there are some fantastic coastal walks between the Cinque Terres (5 small villages just north of Porto Venere). It didn't seem too pricy although admittedly their season is only just starting.
For accomodation, it may be worth checking out the local tourist board - they often have small guest houses on their books which work out much cheaper than hotels. Bon voyage!
We did a 2-centre trip to Italy in Nov 2003. Had 3 nights in Rome to do the usual sights (Vatican, etc.) and then got the train down to Sorrento for 4 nights which was ample time to visit Pompeii, Capri and just soak up the atmosphere. We stayed in a fab little B&B right in the centre of sorrento, which was pretty reasonable at the time and turned out to be more of an apartment with full kitchen facilities (although we made the most of the great local restaurants). I think they have a added a couple more rooms, but take a look at their website to see if it fits in with you budget.
Have a good time wherever you decide to go.
