If my memory serves me right, she ascended the throne after the death of her father, George VI, on Feb 6th 1952. The Coronation was on 2nd June 1953 ...... so why have the Diamond Jubilee now ??? Surely it should have been on 6th Feb this year, or maybe even 2nd June next year ???
What am I missing ???

it's to celebrate her accession to the throne, not her coronation. It's now rather than February as it's summer and the weather is better (mwaahaha)
Perhaps we can have another one next year gizmo, since this one has been so successful.
That is true, but heard yesterday, Feb is wet and cold (ironic to yesterday) and she was officially Queen for 16 months, when crowned so made it this year
For no other reason than hoping the weather might be better. It is for the same reason that the Sovereign's official birthday is in June. This was introduced by Edward VII whose birthday was in November. He thought that June would be a better month in which to hold the Sovereign's annual parade.
So did anyone notice the poor old Duke of Edinburgh has been taken into hospital with a bladder infection and has missed the lot?
so what is the next milestone after a diamond jubilee???
Platinum.
No one knows as it's never happened before. I suppose if the Queen lives another ten years it would be a platinum jubilee.

At least I know I'm not missing anything then - it was moved in the hope of better weather then eh ..... hmmm, that didn't quite go to plan then lol.
Yea I reckon we should have another one next year Starbuck - call this one a trial run :)
I suppose if she manages another 5 years we could have a sapphire jubilee.
There wasn't a worldwide celebration on 1st January 2001, even though that was when the 21st century actually began...
platinum it is markrae...i just looked on wiki....

Well spotted Mark - I also noticed that at the time ......
Thanks for the confirmation... ;-)
think it might be in 5 year terms now!!!
Sapphire is surely 45 years, not 65. The next would be platinum.

Anyway - back on topic, it threw me that the weekend that they have the Diamond Jubilee is the same weekend that we would be celebrating the coronation .... that's why I was wondering if I was missing anything.
Do u reckon they moved it to this date on purpose, or is it just a coincidence ???
In three years or so she becomes the longest-serving British monarch, which may merit a small celebration.(Highlight will probably be Charles beating his head against the palace wall.)
According to Wiki sapphire is 65th

Just goes to show you can't trust Wiki - but diamond has to be more precious than sapphire, no?
