my gripe for the day.

call me old fashioned - but i was brought up to be well mannered and respectful.

i always wipe my feet, when entering a premesis, wherever and whenever i go, regardless of the weather. occsionally, that has resulted in someone behind me walking into me, because they have assumed i would not stop - as they don't.
i see, in wet weather, many damp footprints leading into a place because people don't bother.

also - i often hold doors open for people .. they walk straight in without even an acknowledgement, let alone a 'thank you'

normally - i just shrug it off however, both matters have happened quite a few times today while i was in town - and i guess it was the straw that broke the camel's back, and my blood just started to boil.

whinge over .. having cup of tea and cream cake to indulge myself now.

You are welcome excelsior.
Another thing people don`t seem to do these days is put their hand up when they cough or yawn. They just walk around with their mouth wide open giving everyone a view of their tonsils.

oh yeuk!
i'd forgotten that.
of course one must cover one's mouth ..
237sj - very true.

Also, why do so many young men spit on the pavement? It must be one of the most disgusting things ever.

Pavement oysters....bleurgh

mrs O.

that, when i see it happen - makes me feel quite ill.
Ewwww...
As for language.....

I've actually commented to young lads (don't know them) on a bus that nearly every other word was a swear word.

I've commented to others - usually if I'm behind them in a queue! Occasionally I get a "sorry"

And mobile phones ..... don't get me started

And smokers - the stink coming from them when in the same queue, or smoking where they shouldn't be.....
Hello excelsior, look what you have started now. Spitting on pavements is disgusting, even more so when the person happens to be female, I won't say a lady as they definitely aren't. yuk.

furry.

i am sure that you are most decidedly a lady.
Thank you excelsior, I would like to think so.
So I`m not the only one shouting "Thank you!" when I hold the door open for a rude person. I sometimes hand back litter to the person who dropped it and have popped a cigarette packet through a car window a second after it was thrown out.
The seat on public transport is difficult. On the Tube last month a young girl got up and gave me her seat. Was I miffed!
People often in my humble view mistake decency for weakness

i applaud the way you handled the situation
It always makes me smile when someone displays good manners, because it seems so rare these days. Like others on here, I always make a comment if the person I've opened the door for doesn't acknowledge it !!
In addition to the above, what really get up my goat is when people who do are in lower paid jobs are treated like dirt. Checkout operators, waiters etc. etc. It seems many customers do not think that because these people are employed to serve them they do not deserve a smile back or a reply to how are you today?
When I was still at the chalkface and I said ""Excuse me to a group blocking a corridor, there was usually the response "Why wotcherdun?" The reply "Been brought up with manners" wasn't popular!
I give up my seat to old ladies, hold doors open for people, and help mothers carry pushchairs up stairs at train stations (as others used to do for me). People say "thanks" every time. But that's mostly in and around the big city.
yes, I am another who likes manners. I also shout after someone if I have
held open a door, and they don't say thankyou...usually it's ..thankyou would
be nice!...
Look behind if I'm going through a door and hold it if there is someone
following.
Once helped a girl carry her pushchair up a flight of stairs..forgetting that I
was awaiting an operation on my shoulder...in complete agony helping her, but
just smiled and carried on! Just instinct to help.
people always moan that THEIR generation had respect, manners, was good, wore smart clothes, trustworthy etc etc etc.

however, if that was truly the case then YOUR generation obviously didnt pass it on to the next generation very well - did you? - or they would all be just like your generation, wouldnt they?

YOU are the reason the next generation was lacking... you did not teach properly ... and in turn the generation after that failed too ...

your parents and elders taught you how to be... but you failed to pass it on...
