Normally 1 Godmother and 1 Godfather - there is no difference whether the child is male or female.

That is what we did too, mind you that was 30 years ago. It was definitely the tradition here in Yorkshire, and where I used to live down south.

I thought the only requirement was that you had to have two, one male one female. I've not heard the 2:1 convention before.

where we lived when i was christened it was 2:1 (i have 2 godmothers and 1 godfather, as does my sister)

yes that's my understanding too, two of the same gender and one of the opposite gender. However that's only a tradition, not a requirement, in reality the parents can choose to do whatever they wish.
I believe that in the Royal Family, some children have many more godparents.

Yes, i agree with daisynonna and woifgang. Traditionally, 2 of the same sex and one of the opposite, although you can actually have whoever you like and as many as you like.
