I Want To Be Scottish

I've been doing some research but have not come to any conclusions and wonder if anyone can help me.

I'm an Englishman living in England but want to become Scottish. I've always had a love for the country, and fond memories of holidays to Edinburgh with my family when my kids were growing up. I love the poetry of Robert Burns and feel an affiliation to the Saltire. I love the Scottish landscapes and the Scottish people.

My wife left me last year and I've decided it's time to start making the changes that make me happy, and to be who I want to be. I despise English culture and what this country has become - the election result was the final staw that made me decide that I want to become Scottish.

The impression I get from what I've read is that I can just start calling myself Scottish and filling in forms giving my nationality as Scottish if I wish. It's totally my choice how I wish to identify. Does anyone know if this is correct?

It's not rude, it's fact. I'm Welsh, it's practically a state of mind, you can't just become a certain nationality. Also, how often do you need to state what nationality you are? Are you going to affect an accent?

I looked after a chap in casualty who had mandible cancer. He had a beautiful wife and two lovely children the perfect marriage. The consultant thought the cancer may be due to a previous suicide attempt. Basically 10 years earlier his first marriage had ended and thinking he had nothing to life for attempted suicide using weed killer (I think). He did not realise his best years were yet to come. Funny I looked after him for a short period but I often think of him.

One has the nationality where one is born. One can adopt another nationality, such as ones parents, but the issue with being Scottish is that it doesn't have its own national government but is part of a united kingdom. One doesn't really change going across the border. I would tend to agree that you may call yourself what you wish, but it may be difficult to convince the natives. Worthwhile trying though, as I understand it would increase the average IQ of both populations should you make it.

What rot - a black person born in England is English (same for Scotland and Wales, etc). Get over it, your not Scottish and if that's your biggest problem, good for you.
