Like you say, you don't know much about it, but apparently he had spat at a police and shown "disobedience towards authority".

And the child was so traumatised that he wet his pants, shocking overreaction by the police.
I watched it on the news. Seeing the police holding the child back while he was trying to protect his father was heart breaking. The punishment far outweighed the 'alleged' crime. According to the news here in Malta the grand father was also hit in the face with a baton.
