I heard about this for the first time only last night on the TV program ''It was OK in the 60 s'' but did not believe it was true.
But a bit of Googling found it was true and was a phase used by the Conservative candidate in the 1964 Smethwick election. The Conservatives won the seat with a 7.5% swing from Labour.

Astounding how far we have moved on.

Some things are best consigned to the history books.
A lot of things on that show were shocking and unbelievable, but my OH, who was around at the time, assures me that that is how things were.
Not to everyone. My granddads best mates were Jamaican....
I think that was the reason Malcolm X visited Smethwick, just before he was assassinated.
We should all learn from history and not make the same mistakes.
Have we really moved on that much?

Have you never heard of "white flight", the tendency for "white" people to move out of an area once immigrants start moving in and people begin feeling the area will go downhill.

Plenty of web sites on the internet discussing "white flight", many after the recent London census showed the number of "white British" in London was dropping due to them moving out.

See this article (there are others)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/9888310/Lets-talk-about-the-exodus-of-600000-whites-from-London.html

Maybe a politician would not use that phrase you mentioned above any more, but many "white British" people still feel that way.
Times change, and the present always looks down on the past.
I would like to say Happy New Year to ALL my brothers & sisters whether they be Black ,Brown,Yellow or Green with Orange spots. We are all God's ( Allah's) children.

I for one do not wish to be associated with Allah thank you, given the atrocities that are being committed in his name
Eddie ....How far have we actually moved though on ?

Replace the N word for lots of others and it could still happen.

A year or two ago, I became embroiled in an argument in our local village cafe. One of the Villages well-known knuckle-draggers was bemoaning the take-over of the Post Office by some P words. I pointed out that as they were Hindus, it was highly unlikely that they came from Pakistan. He told me it didn't f.......g matter because they were still black !

While we still have people of this level of stupidity in our midst, the naked racism of the 60's-70's could return in a flash.

Racism never really went away and is lurking just below the surface.
Me neither (Allah) but being an ex copper I was often asked if I knew my mum and dad. :-)

May be in Wales but not in the Metropolis. It is out in the open, always has been the case and always will be.
Although I am a Cockney, its been a long time since I worked or lived in Town Retrocop, but if its true what you say, than that sounds like a very sad and worrying situation indeed.

But I believe that this "lurking beneath the surface" business is across the whole country. I am meeting more people like that wassock in the cafe nowadays, then I used to a few years ago, and it would seem to me that racism is definitely on the increase.
//racism is definitely on the increase. //

Why do you think that is?

I posted something earlier on another thread when you declared what a cosmopolitan multicultural city that Swansea was and a you rarely see a hijab from day to day.
My research shows 4 mosques in your CITY.
If you care to check the 32 London Boroughs you will find 13 mosques in the London Borough of Merton and 68+ plus mosques in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. That is two boroughs within a City of 32.
Swansea is a mere backwater when it comes to multiculturalism. One of the mosques is in Swansea University where many of my family have taught and still do so.
If you were born or bred in Wembley then I suggest you have good hearing because you are not a true cockney if you were not born within the sound of Bow Bells.
True cockneys are diminishing because they are getting pushed out by Muslims and there is resentment a plenty here in London. It is dubbed Londanistan here in London by our friends across the ditch and it seems they have a better knowledge of the make up of the population in the UK than people who live here in the sticks.
Question Author
retrocop, A Muslim born within the sound of Bow Bells is not a cockney then?
I was unaware that there was any other requirement than being born within the sound of 'the Bells'.
How about a Black / coloured second / third generation Londoner born in Bow ( and there are many of them) would he / she be a cockney?
Eddie
Mikey hasled me to believe he was bought up in Wembley,West London from past threads of his.
As a Londoner born and bred I know that tradition dictates that a true cockney is born within the sound of Bow Bells.
I was born in the Borough of Hampstead so have no right to describe myself as a cockney.
You are suggesting that a muslim or other ethnic born within the bells is not a cockney. I said no such thing. I was adressig Mikey's claim to be a cockney.
