When news topics are discussed in real life away from here - be it down the pub, at the dinner table, in the office or in the factory it's quite normal for differing opinions to get heated. I don't take that at rudeness. It's only seen as rude on AB. I'd suggest many don't post in News because they don't have the knowledge or eloquence to back up what they think when asked for it. I'd be the first to admit that's my reason anyway.

You're absolutely right Prudie, my eloquence on political matters is poor I have to admit, but with acquaintances I can debate and we can disagree but funnily enough none of them have ever accused me of being a terrorist sympathiser or a friend of (whatever the word of today is).

Civilised considered debate and that is the difference.

Mamy at 23.22 is spot on.....I had dinner with some abers a few weeks ago and two of them, one a bit left and one a bit right, said they never contrubute to a news thread now because the endless name calling, lack of civilised debate and general unwillingless to accept the validity of another's opinion makes it a pointless exercise.

It's a shame because both would add greatly to any subject but know only too well now the type of response they would receive......x

why is this anything to do with the left? Cameron came to power promising to cut immigration. It's grown. All the left can say is that Cameron is breaking promises, surprise surprise. He also promised a quick decision on Heathrow, jail for people carrying knives, and no rise in VAT. As far as I'm concerned this is the right's problem, since their man is in power and you can't believe a word he says.

I accept that a load of debates on news end up as a debacle. A cat fight. There are moderators though one appears to stir the cat fight up more often than not.
Most debates end up heated. Site Rules acknowledge that. If there is rudeness we get suspended don't we?

There is the rudeness and nastiness that gets us suspended or banned.....then there is the low level rudeness......just the right side of breaking AB rules....and that can go on and on in a thread.
Some seem to enjoy it.......but it's not debate.......debate includes listening and considering.

Very true. Most seem quite adept, however, at circumnavigating that situation. Those who can't reach for the "report button"

meanwhile - why do the left protest at something - gays being flung off buildings and not others ( not much protest about Bataclan 99 dead or indeed the stabbings at Hurghada )

and why do the right insist that saying boo to a goose and frightening a little old lady can only have been done by a dark man who looks like Saddam Hussein whose only words are ' I kill you now'
