All this talk about leaving which was EEC .What was the for you the most annoying or down right stupid directive from the EEC .Mine would have been getting rid of Stones and pounds .(is ton still allowed ) .

I wish they had enacted a European law to stop people doing name checks after going on Popmaster - then I might have voted to remain.
I don't know if ton is still allowed but tonne is very little different from ton (2205 lb = tonne, 2240 lb = ton), so it's not worth bothering about.
half a litre is nearly a pint and it's very much worth bothering about
Stones, pounds, ounces, pints, gallons are no longer banned.
We in the UK still measure shoe sizes in barleycorns.
I liked my stiff blue British Passport.
Nothing as I travel to Europe quite a bit so it makes it easier - all that converting was doing my head in!!

Scorps.....I bought a cucumber and some bananas this morning and both were refreshingly curved !
Are avoirdupois weights really really OK again hc4361? Great, I always ask for 'half a pound' - etc. anyway.

Funnily enough, when I lived in France I would happily ask for '250 grams' etc.. It was a nightmare converting all my recipes to their metric equivalent, until I bought a Delia Smith cookery book and discovered that it starts with conversion tables. :)
Interestingly, the French often use the word "livre" (= pound) for half a kilo - they are roughly the same.
Our local market (deep in 'France Profonde) had a stall selling eggs in dozens!
I find it slightly amusing that my coffee packet has the weight as 227g which is half a pound. Why can't we just call it half a pound?
When a baby is born, we all want to know what its weight is in pounds and ounces, not kilograms.
What the hell has the EEC (or its successor bodies) got to do with with 'getting rid of stones or pounds'?

My primary school was using both systems when I joined the 3rd year juniors in 1962.

When I transferred to secondary school in 1964 we were told that only metric units must be used.

The Metrication Board was set up in 1969 upon the recommendation of the Confederation of British Industry and the British Standards Institution.

The UK didn't join the EEC until 1973.
I can't relate easily distances / speed in meteres / kilometers - volume in litres etc

Give me a measurement in inches or feet and I can picture it.
(usually in relation to a school ruler)

Give it in centimetres and I can't.
