Funnily enough, when I lived in France I would happily ask for '250 grams' etc.. It was a nightmare converting all my recipes to their metric equivalent, until I bought a Delia Smith cookery book and discovered that it starts with conversion tables. :)

What the hell has the EEC (or its successor bodies) got to do with with 'getting rid of stones or pounds'?
My primary school was using both systems when I joined the 3rd year juniors in 1962.
When I transferred to secondary school in 1964 we were told that only metric units must be used.
The Metrication Board was set up in 1969 upon the recommendation of the Confederation of British Industry and the British Standards Institution.
The UK didn't join the EEC until 1973.
