the UK authorities don't help themselves here - only in the UK do they bend over backwards to communicate in languages other than those adjudged official on these shores. wouldn't a common language help to aid integration?

Mushroom, I know of countries where a second and even a third (foreign) language is provided, for example in automated communications systems, libraries being stocked with foreign language books, etc. to facilitate things for immigrants and visitors - and the reach of such gestures is wider than within the UK. No generally perceived threat from foreigners there they are widely welcomed and invited to become part of everything. Social barriers within the UK's own indigenous population have been evident for much longer than today's immigrant numbers (Muslim or otherwise), and those barriers have been actively maintained (more recently not least from below). It has been said that the awful ghettos of England were Karl Marx's inspiration for a counter-culture outlined in the communist manifesto called Das Kapital.

Karl, my parents lived in France and they discovered very quickly that officialdom does not recognize any inability to communicate with them. if you needed an interpreter to speak for you or to translate official documentation, then you pay for it. in the UK the interpreter is free for the user and documents are printed in multi languages. that doesn't encourage anyone to even attempt to learn to communicate with the indigenous population.

there are no true ghettoes in the UK. southall broadway had (at the last census) a white population of only 12% but the remaining population was ethnically and culturally diverse, so doesn't qualify. the nearest possibility is the London Borough of Newham but even there the dominant culture is of insufficient percentage or concentration to be called a ghetto.

In the latest Census, Muslims made up less than 5% of the population of Great Britain. I realise that this percentage is not spread evenly throughout the land and that in some paces there may appear to be more Muslims, and in other places, far, far less.

Some adherents of Islam are giving cause for concern but the vast majority are not terrorists.

Is your intolerance to foreigners at the cause of your problems perhaps ?

Are you actively looking for ways to be offended ?

True, very true and that census was in 2011. The main concern which I believe redvanman may be alluding is that there has been a rapid growth of Islam due to increased immigration and more importantly the rise in Muslin birth rate. In the last 10 years on AB where Islamisation of the West has been the topic, there has been reassurance that this is a myth...a worry that is unnecessary and finally a sort of neurotic concern.

Even if, in the unlikely event that the percentage of Muslims has doubled in the 5 years since the last census, it would still mean that over 90% of the population are NOT Muslim.

Using simple arithmetic, its not difficult to see that the fears of people like yourself and redvanman are difficult to maintain.

As a Atheist, I am in a minority in Britain, but that doesn't stop me from living my life as I wish, and everybody else is free to do the same.

In redvanman's defense I've witnessed these 'ghettos'. There's large areas in Nelson, Burnley, Blackburn (local areas to me) where the asian population is extremely strong and 'white' people are made to feel and even told they're not welcome to enter.

Why do you think that it is "unlikely?" I won't be on this earth in 2022 but i would bet that a survey at that time would show that the Muslim population in the UK would be MORE than doubled.........just a feeling mikey.
