A tweet I have just read prompted this thread.

We often here cries of (I can only assume as some sort of misguided defence)

'He was born here in Britain'

But does being born here make you British?

divebuddy (and others) because being Muslim is over-arching to the point that nationality is purely secondary. There's not many religions that do that, Judaism perhaps...?

It seems to me that there are two answers to this question .
There is the legal definition of who are British .

Then there is personal feeling of the individual as to whether they consider themselves to be British , even though the law defines them as being british .

British is where the heart is

Nationality is about far more than where you are born, it is how you are raised, educated and friends you make, the life you choose to lead and the guidelines you adhere to.

It's about absorbing where you are and who you are with - some find all of this easy and others find it impossible.

That is the problem and no doubt always has been and always will.

I would prefer to be classed as Scots and have a Scots passport but Scotland does not have its own passport yet!
