Due to being shut out of facebook I had to resort to doing some clearing out to pass the time - joy of joys I found a fiver in an old pair of jeans and a two pound coin among some old papers. Decided to treat myself to a Chinese take away from just up the road which I knew came to exactly £7 - all well and good till I presented my new found wealth and the man behind the counter stared at me like I was from another planet - "no good, no good" he said rather excitedly waving my OLD five pound note at me! Suddenly dawned on me what he meant and i had to walk home and get my purse then go to the bank at the other end of town to get some cash as they don't take cards for orders under a tenner. Wasn't half worth it in the end though.

I agree with Tambo. I cannot understand why old pound coins are no longer accepted. I have a few of them which will probably end up in charity boxes. When the new threepenny bit came out in 1937 the old silver ones were still valid until 1971, when we went decimal.

Bank will change it and most private retail outlets take old money. Our salon take it from 'them wots stashed under mattresses' much to the disgust of our bank. We never refuse any money!

Costs us 70p for each cheque paid into bank. £25 + VAT for card machine hire and 8-10p per transaction. Give us cash as we keep full value.

Agree. There was another thread on here yesterday about the benefits of a cashless society. Although it costs me nothing to use my debit card, if that ever came about the banks would put the screws on. There will always be a place for cash.
