Last night, my son, (27), who lives alone, went to bed, and his Jack Russel dog settled down beside him.
Twenty minutes later, the dog sat up, stared at the ceiling and started growling.
My son settled the dog down.
This happened twice more over the next half hour.
Then my son felt pressure on the mattress like somebody pressing down on the mattress just behind him.
THEN, he said he felt the bed shaking. Went on for a few minutes then stopped.
My son (sadly ) is an atheist and doesn't go in for mumbo jumbo or things that go bump in the night.
It spooked him a bit.
What do you think?

Sorry. Wrong category. Never mind.
Your son is right
That he was actually asleep and was dreaming.

Probably. What I said.

Sleep paralysis, my son gets it all the time. Quiet disturbing by all accounts.
Question Author
Certainly was.
Doesn't sound like sleep paralysis if he didn't have the feeling of not being able to move.
agree, ummmm, sleep paralysis is when you can't move; it doesn't matter if hobgoblins are leaping up and down on your bed. It's not pelasant.
Sleep paralysis manifests in different ways I believe ummm,

I suggested dreaming. He insisted he had not been in bed long and was wide awake.
It's awful. I've experienced it 3 or 4 times. Honestly, it would put you off sleeping.
I don't think so, Nailit, that's why it's called paralysis.
Our dog when she was younger used to look up and bark at a corner of the ceiling where it meets the stairwell. Always the same place, used to freak me out.
My cat sits on the chest freezer and stares down the back of it. I start getting nervous thinking we might have mice or rats.
Question Author
Very strange.
Big spider on the ceiling and your lad's imagination ran away with him.

Had sleep paralysis many times... *** scary ***.
Small earth tremor.
A slight earthquake? Train going past or under the house? Neighbours making floor vibrate? Or most probably half-dreaming.

I could have sworn I heard my OH call out for me last night, but when I looked in on him he was fast asleep. I have also heard him go down the stairs when he wasn't in the house. I am sure they were half-dreams too, even though they didn't feel like it at the time.
Do you ever just drop off to sleep and then you jump for no apparent reason waking yourself up.
Yes I do occasionally.
