I think often very clever people are sharper than slightly duller folks but not necessarily unkind. I'd personally rather have both but if one over the other kindness wins every time x

Pixie, //I think woof and tilly are right, you are born with a character and potential and build from there.//

Woofgang doesn’t believe that. She believes kindness is taught.
Maybe wrong but thinking nature and nurture?
If anybody still has my e mail address from years ago, would LOVE to hear from you.
If kindness isn't taught why do parents get the blame for misbehaved children?
// Disappointed to discover I was lied to as a child - they said go to school and learn and you'll be clever.//

oh I had - if you dont go to skool - you will have to be a labourer and you will starve !
this wasnt a lie.
agricultural labourers were on strike for £7 / wk in 1959

Well, mebbe a fib then - that's why I'm not clever.
Buddhism teaches that a person becomes virtuous by performing virtuous acts.
Compassion - definitely, but I don't believe I've ever come across the word "kindness" as an entity in itself.
It seems to me a word which is used a lot, but has no real meaning.
Atheist - "I personally think that it's better to be kind than clever. Clever but not kind equals Reese-Mogg or Johnson."
How do you know Jacob Rees-Mogg is not kind, do you know him personally?
^Or Johnson?
a clever person would be kind.

If you're cleaver then in theory you should be good at understanding. This should make you emphatic, which should in theory make you kind.

There are many categories of cleaver, and there are many categories of kindness.
Mrs Danvers giving money to charity is a tax write off which is why the mega rich do it, if you think Bill Gates was kind you should read how he treated his ex lover and daughter
-- answer removed --
Bill gates gave most of his money to charity. His own charity.

I'm sure he may be kind, but if he is, then that's just as unfounded gossip as if he is unkind.

Put it this way.

If someone has £1 and they donate 99p to charity then they're someone who offers more than someone who has a billion pounds donating 50 million.
In other words.. think bills donations really affected his finances? Pfft.

And yes, it would be different.
You are quite right Mrs Danvers
Why can’t we be both!
We can, Carol, it's easy.
