How do you think the issue about the teaching of sexual and family diversity is going to be resolved? Especially as the temperature will be raised further next year when it becomes a legal(?) requirement on all primary schools to instruct their pre-pubescent pupils about same-sex marriage.
It seems to me that there's an intractable contradiction in an educational policy which promotes the idea that homosexuality is "OK" to the children of parents who think it is not.
But I'm not that an imaginative person. The British have a gift for compromise (we are told). What's the likely British compromise here?

The authorities should make it clear to these parents that unless they send their children to school on a regular basis, then they must either home teach them themselves or move them to a private school.

/// aog, would you want your young children attending these lessons? ///
In this instance it is not about teaching them about homosexuality (which is now no longer unlawful) but explaining to them that there are children that happen to have parents that are of the same sex.
This is a fact that should be explained to young children, who have always had enquiring minds.

The principle I'm not sure we should be encouraging the principle of parents choosing what their children should or should not be taught. On this issue, at least, I can understand, even though I do not agree with, the position that these parents are taking: homosexuality is condemned in most religions. But on the other hand, should religious beliefs have a place any more in guiding our education system? And what if it applies to other aspects of education, eg science lessons? Would we be happy if the principle were extended to, eg, blocking children from learning about the Big Bang Theory, etc?
There's no basis for rejecting LGBT education from any perspective other than a (fundamentalist) religious perspective. No child is being indoctrinated into believing that they can make a choice to be anything other than what they are by teaching about it, even from a young age. Acceptance and inclusivity are healthy values to present to young people.

aog, //it would seem by your objection to them, that your homophobia overrides your usual Islamophobia. //
Did writing that nonsense please you, aog. Too late to attempt to wipe your slate clean at the expense of others.
//It's a rare and almost thrilling thing for me to be in agreement with AOG. //
There's an answer to that ... but I won't mention it. ;o)

These things should not be taught or even mentioned in schools. I class myself as open minded and inclusive with a live and let live attitude. I was not taught this at school or certainly not by my right wing very judgmental parents. Children are accepting without the need for explanation. 'Why has (insert childs name) got two mummies can be answered very easily by parents with an age appropriate reply in the same way 'why has janey not got a pee pee like I have' would be answered. Schools are there for teaching academic subjects not for teaching about alternative lifestyles.

I thought you intelligent enough to realise that I was being sarcastic as well as playing devil's advocate.
It was aimed at those who are always willing to play these two cards at every opportunity.
Both you and I are always in line for such insults, when debating on certain sensitive issues.
