With Nicola chomping at the bit for a second Scottish Independence referendum, clearly supported by many Scots here, I’ve yet to see any of them offer a rational explanation for that support. Such a move has to be economically damaging to Scotland at the very least. For the benefit of those who cannot see the sense in it, can anyone explain it please?

Here are 10 reasons to support Scottish independence: https://www.independentscotland.org/articles/14270/why-support-scottish-independence.htm Of course, the site is pro-independence, so hardly surprising! However, if you look at the menu on the right, they also have a similar page entitled "Why be against Scottish independence?" And, a...

That’s a different obstacle tho: a political one. I thought you were talking about “meeting the conditions”
// jim: "Explain to yourself why you wanted to leave the EU, replace Brussels with Westminster, and you'll be more or less where you need to be to understand the Scottish Independence movement. " - you may have a point if the EUSSR was continually pumping money into the UK, Instead we were a net contributor to a club that we had very little control over. //

Leaving aside the last part (why *should* we have any more control over the EU than should be expected from a country that is only one in 28?) I agree that the rest is a key difference. Still, I would have thought that support for leaving the EU would still have been fairly high even if we weren't a net contributor. Maybe not as high, but surely comparable. Didn't the desire to leave run deeper than that?
Also, in answer to OG at 10:31, I'm not saying I support the case for Scotland leaving the UK. I absolutely do not. But that isn't the same as trying to explain it.
I'm actually not sure that answers OG at 10:31 specifically, on reflection. Never mind.
there doesn't, after reading though the thread any answer to your question Naomi. I can't say why Scotland wants it's Independence from the rest of the UK, yet wants according to La Sturgeon, to join the EU, why?
The reason Scotland would want to join the EU but leave the UK is also not difficult to put. EU membership allows nations that on their own would be small on the world stage to punch well above their weight.

emmie, if it ever happens there will be a mighty gap to fill between Scotland leaving the UK and Scotland joining the EU - if they ever do. What they intend to do in the meantime remains a mystery.
shouldn't Scotland sort out it's domestic problems first, they seem myriad
Oh, absolutely so, emmie.
for one thing they'd have to build a hard border and join the Euro, err that's two things!
See, there we go Naomi. Your English abers seem to know the answer to the op .
The Scots appear incapable of a straight answer. You wriggled like a worm and said nothing useful to the debate.
If that post is for me retro, you are quite correct ,I have no wish to be Involved in the debate.
^So why are you even posting then ??
It’s called , choices. :-)
I wish Scotland to be an independent nation as do many Scots. I wish folk, particularly the English, could separate Independence from the SNP party. Not all those who want independence support the SNPs. I believe Scotland would benefit from remaining a member of the EU. At no time have I said it would be an easy transition, but at least if mistakes were made they would be ours, and not those foisted on us by Westminster. I don't think as things stand that there is a level playing field and England always comes first. Even the BBC news mainly features figures from England/Wales. Couldn't count how many times have I heard "The Queen of England". Considering the contempt that Scotland is held in by many on here, why are you so against us leaving?
Thanks for giving a reason maggiebee.
For the record. I hoped and prayed Scotland remained in the first referendum. Now I hope you get a second chance ,only, this time the English and Scots ex pats are allowed to vote as well. Westminster didn’t debar the Scots in the Brexit vote!
There is no queen of England; she is queen of the UK.
// There is no queen of England //

the jury's still out on that one, with an argument that dates back to 1952. the current queen, Elizabeth, is "the second" of England but strictly speaking, only "the first" of Scotland.
Not quite. She is the second Elizabeth to reign in what is now the UK. This was put to bed over a 100 years ago on the accession of Edward VII, when it was decided that in the case of a discrepancy the higher number would prevail. Thus, if we ever have a King James he will be James VIII and not III.
