Sir POLKINGHORNE: Religion — or rather theology — is, I think, the great integrating discipline. It takes the insights of science — doesn’t tell science what to think — but it takes science’s insights and understandings, it takes the insights of morality, takes the insights of aesthetics, the study of beauty. The wonderful order or pattern of the world that science discovers and rejoices in is a reflection, indeed, of the mind of the creator, whose will and purpose lie behind the world. Our moral intuitions, our intimations of God’s good and perfect will, our experiences of beauty, I believe, are sharing in the joy of the creator, the creation. You can soon see the gross inadequacy of thinking that science can tell you everything that you could possibly know.
He assumes G/god exists.

I agree with his point that science can only explain so much. Dark energy, dark matter. Not understood by scientists.

In the early 1900s physicists thought they understood how the world worked. Then Einstein, quantum mechanics came along.
TL. Could you please say something, instead of quoting non-understandable and unheard-of people?
My ability to think underpins my take on morality.
Don't much care if folk define it as objective or subjective.

Atheist - It must be now abundantly clear that I am not in that category, "clever."
I am what I am and have no pretensions to be what I am not or punch above my weight.
There are many on here who love to show off, but count me out.
After a,lifetime in industry, I am well experienced with dealing with University educated managers and engineers, and have found about a third of them totally unimpressive, and some downright stupid and dangerous. But hey ho they have a degree :-) Wow!
So no I am not clever, never claim to be, and in fact like to come on here to learn.
TL; you sound as if you have a chip on your shoulder. You really should try to respond to people without resorting to accusations of others thinking they are cleverer than you. I'm not here to catch you out or to try to be superior. I ask straight questions. If you don't have decent answers, please don't act the victim. Why not ask me to clarify my points? I'd be happy to discuss things in a polite way.
TL. You posted a question and then ignored my response, apart from pasting stuff about Polkinghorne. Man up! Against my will I am finding you a waste of time - you ignore people and then plead victimhood. Have you no self-respect? Would god be proud of you?
Theland, did you post this question without knowing what you were talking about? If not, why don't you answer Atheist's questions?
‘ you ignore people and then plead victimhood‘

Same old, same old.

My moral beliefs are based on the objective standards of God as the supreme authority.
I find subjective personal morality too fluid to have value and in fact dangerous.
Doubtless you've got it right then. Carry on. :o/
That would then depend upon the type of person, some may seek the objective route as their own moral compass is off course.
Question Author
The bible is not contradictory when it comes to morality.
The ultimate authority is the teaching of Jesus Christ. Nothing contradictory there.
On the other hand, society is dynamic and standards change over time. There is no consistency.
Standards are adjusted to suit society rather than society conforming to an irrevocable standard.

Naomi - nothing less than I expected.
Question Author
Atheist - you feel our morality is innate and subjective.
Half right.
We are made in the image of God so His morality is ingrained in us, but then we abuse it an replace it with mans wisdom which leads us in an entirely different direction.
And do,please keep the unfriendly comments to yourself.
For the record, I don't proclaim victim hood by watching the various egos playing out.
Question Author
Nietche realised that far from becoming enlightened, we had killed off God in our lives and were left without the ultimate moral compass.
He had no faith in mankinds ability to find his own way.
He was right.
Question Author
Sir John Polkinghorne was a world leading scientist and theologian at Cambridge University.
An opinion worth consideration.
Question Author
We now have a morality of convenience.
It is based on our own selfish feelings and majority consensus.
Inconvenient truths are simply ignored.
Theland, //We are made in the image of God so His morality is ingrained in us//

I sincerely hope that isn’t true. He was horrible. In fact, if he appeared on earth now and carried on the way he carried on according to the story, we’d lock him up in a secure psychiatric unit and throw away the key. Who would want to emulate him? Not me thanks.
