Christmas adverts - cartoon characters which used to be aimed at children. 'Literature' - which is often about magic and dragons and fairies and princesses or angels, which used to be aimed at children. Am I getting old?

Couldn’t get into Harry Potter or any Terry Pratchet book myself, most definitely not my cup of tea, either of them.
Ahhh ... right. You haven't read them, apg, but you know they're boring. Okkaay......
I was talking about the films of Harry Potter -bored me stiff though my children seemed to like them. I would not even consider buying the books.
Your choice.
Naomi -yes, I appreciate there are millions of fans, but those of us that are not really don't stay awake at night wondering what we've missed :-)
As I said, your choice. You're sleeping habits aren't my concern.
'Your'
// You can omit the word 'getting', I think, Atheist ;-)//

I wd drop infantilization too
is it a word ? it shd mean making infantile - which isnt intended here.

are they aiming adverts at children so they will pressure their dear parents to spend money on more child-oriented tat?

yes - and I dont think this is new - at least 50 y old probably around 100. Victoria was very keen on it to promote her view of the Royal Family as the family of the nation
rather than her 'wicked uncles' ( her words ) who thought of the Royal Family and court as a bonk bank
Atheist,I dont recognise your thoughts concerning Literature.

I read loads, moreso in lockdown, and writing is in v gud hands I think.

Take the Booker Prize (announced a few days ago). Many seasoned award winners didnt make the shortlist and 4 of the 6 were debut authors inc the v worthy winner (no fairies, etc)

A record number of books were released on one day recently and theres a loada gud stuff out there.
// Couldn’t get into Harry Potter or any Terry Pratchet book myself,//
Harry potter yes
quite well written I thought
Terry P cdnt get into - and wd therefore consider "boring"

not sure if I wd do them again - unlike Dickens where the tv does drive me back to the prose. Last night - Anthony Hopkins as Magwitch wivva Darzet accent - oh dear
god you need a prize or medal if you are reading the booker also-rans
//My opinion, I prefer Terry Prachett's books//

I have two shelves full of Discworld books. The Harry Potter books sit on the bookshelf below them. Literary taste is subjective Polly, and to criticise people for reading something you don't like, whether a book for kids or not, is the height of snobbery.
PP,Ive read 2 of the 6 Booker shortlist.The winner was v gud.Set in Glasgow during Thatcher's reign!

(Are u reading Gully??!)
Big surprise was the omission drom the shortlist of the final part of Hilary Mantel's trilogy (other 2 works won the award)
Men do read Harry Potter.
Two of my daughters read all the HP books - in their twenties - but both absolutely abhor the films. This trait must run in the family for I, too, am often disappointed by many films based on novels i have read.
Maaza Mengiste's The Shadow King is described by Salman Rushdie as 'a brilliant novel lyrically lifting history towards myth'

I have to agree, the writing is stunning.
i know any number of men who have read and enjoyed Harry Potter books, they are not just for kids, strange that you should think so, how can you judge something that you have never read...
i doubt many kids watch ads, they are too busy on i pads they are aimed at the parents,
Emmie // how can you judge something that you have never read...//

...I have said more than once on this thread I am judging the films not the books.

I have not read the Bible but have read. or been read snippets . I still feel I can have an opinion on it.
