you just keep the scope tight as you can, dave, and swap up on it. For instance, they'll murder you if you go for the history of Liverpool FC - but if you go for Liverpool FC FA cup history 1980 to 2010, you have more focus.
Back when they used to grill folk for two minutes thirty on specialist, I managed 17 on the Physical Geog of Great Britain....but then I wasn't sitting in the black chair.....
I could possibly scrape by (and I mean scrape by) on British birds without swotting but these days contestants seem to pick a very limited subject they can read up on rather than something they've always known.
I think it was a semi-final. The guy got all his specialist questions right & on general knowledge his final question was which is the smallest mammal - he answered "shrew". They said NO - the European pygmy shrew.
I think he lost in the final!
erm
you have to swot
so you may know a helluva lot about USB switches 1965-1970
but in other rounds you have to do other specialist subjects
and then you can go back to USB switches for the final
1.and so for sick form challenge 1966 I did nothing
2.and so for university cack up I didnt nothing 1970 ( pears actually)
3.then for Open university cock up still nothing because my heat was held after the television appearance. yes
4.then for old buggaz univ challenge 1990 four dictionaries but wasnt picked but that was fun
5. then for old buggaz univ challenge 2016 the same four and a few from oxfam shop - reserve not needed but we won - Trinity Hall
6. 15 - 1 a dictionary - which I didnt win but someone stopped me in the street last month 2021 and said were you on 15-1 - and I said yeah 20 y ago. and he said it is replayed last week. People watch it apparently. I looked much younger. 20 y younger hence the q
and I can tell you reading a dictionary is incredibly boring
worse than - - - having to read AB for six hours a day - or only TTT threads. Torture it is - honest, awful. I only do it because I am mad - I mean have you seen the rubbish TTT writes on a good day?
I am currently on my second way froo a NT greek dictionary - but at least it means I can read the NT ( no really - I did the grammar in 1964)
and I wrote to the Prime minister last month in Greek ( NT not classical). I was particularly pleased with my translation of AZ ( alpha kai omega ) and vaccination ( colourion ) eye ointment - inoculation - oculus - geddit ???
// and swap up on it.//
first winner was on commanders in italy 1944-5
he clearly knew all of them - oh that was Bobo the spronk
er Sir Robert Spingle I mean
oh that was Binky le mec - Sir Bingle Bongle I mean
Mark Clark yeah we called him .....
In the old days - a subject + gen. know. and then another subj. I thought I could have a go with fair confidence of not making a total fool of myself. But now I think it is 3 specialist subs. and I don't think I can do that at that depth.
// his final question was which is the smallest mammal - he answered "shrew"//
yeah oi fink oi sorr that one
I said pygmy shrew to the telly - sorex minimus
and he referred to the shrew - sorex araneus
when I was at Porton Down see elsewhere - there was one man there ( killing small animals wiv poison gas like novichok yeah foo !) who was the only fella in the UK who cd breed them
if you trap them, you have to feed them within wivvin sozza 6 h or they starve to death
that is how I know these things - fings I mean
