We have an Indian friend, in his sixties, and quite often, when he is speaking, his voice will crack into a higher register. He obviously regards this as normal, and maybe it is, although to our Western ears it sounds a little odd.

Yesterday in a shop, conversing with the Indian man behind the counter, when he became animated in his conversation, his voice also rose about an octave, and again this was obviously normal to him as well.

Is this a feature of Indian culture - sounding normal to them, but odd to us?
