how cows milk is made available fresh every day in billions of litres? It has to come from a lactating calfs mother who after giving birth, has her baby snatched away from her in order that the milk intended for her calf can be extracted mechanically for humans use. I cannot imagine the cries she makes when this takes place and can still her calf crying for its mother.

I eat recently killed beings, but I prefer not to do it at the expense of causing suffering to sentient beings. If I needed to kill and eat sentient beings, then I would do that, but it is not necessary, so I choose not to do it.
Oh God the same old stupid argument about eating vegetables perpetrated, as usual, by people with no common sense !!
And as for comparing baby calves to puppies and kittens, there is NO comparison. Puppies and kittens, if done correctly, are taken away from their Mums at 8 weeks of age when they are ready to leave and the Mum is generally happy for them to leave, to go to, hopefully, good homes. How is that the same as taking a NEWLY BORN beautiful calf away from its Mum who has just gone through the pain of birth for her never to see it again and to God only knows what for the poor innocent baby ??
We have the power and the knowledge to treat animals so much better, but do we ?? Do we hell !!!

We used to drink unpasturised milk in our village when I was a child. To be honest, I`m surpised the cows were even able to produce offspring seeing how decrepit they were. They had a nice life though trundling through the village every day from their field to the shippon to be milked and back again. It's all well and good thinking about eating meat and drinking milk and caring about the welfare of the animals but if you are going to be all honourable about that, you need to think about vivisection. How many drugs/treatment have you had that have been tested on animals?
Stargazer; a very good post. You might get as much of a response as the old religious posts used to get. I have mentioned my veg tendencies once or twice, but I don't post like that any more, as it seems to provoke ill-will. So far your post has mainly produced sensible discussion for the most part (apart from those who don't see any issue here).
I wasn't actually referring to you Athiest. Farming is hard and it's cruel. One of my early memories is seeing chickens that had their throat cut and they were being hung up by their ankles from a washing line. It was a friend's house and I questioned why the chickens were still flapping around. I was told it was their nerves (it wasn't) My family were farmers for 400 years and they looked after their animals. My Grandfather's Devon Reds were really well looked after but at the end of the day they are going to be killed. That's life unfortunately. I saw the process and knew how it worked but I also knew how the animals had a good life. Unlike vivisection where the animals don't, and people don't see it so they blank it from their mind as if it doesn't happen.
