Every time I go, and it's not always regularly, and sometimes it's a new church, I always get the same; why don't you sit nearer the front? Well, I hate sitting at the front and I like to sit at the back regardless if there's gaps of people or not in the seats. I'm 51 and not a child. Surely I can sit where I choose? This is one of the many reasons I don't go to church as I hate being told what to do!

I gave up attending my local Anglican church many years ago when an older parishioner tapped me on the shoulder and said ' Your sitting in my seat.'

Who tells you ?
Don't go!
It was the same when I went to the last supper. Never again.
If someone says something, just say you prefer to sit at the back. They can't force you to sit elsewhere.
Can’t you just explain that you prefer to sit at the back!
I never really understood mind you why people wanted to do that: at school for example.
At a pantomime I could sort of understand :-)
“It was the same when I went to the last supper. Never again.”

Surely “never again” goes without saying if it’s the last supper (!)
As a church member and a visitor to many churches, I have never been told where to sit. However, if everyone sat at the back it might be a bit strange for the minister/vicar/priest conducting the service. I like to be near the front, but we reserve the front two rows for the Sunday School children when they join us near the end of the service.
ich - 'never again' was a joke :)
There was a hidden joke in there ich, you cracked it. :)
If they haven't seen you there before, they may think you believe you have to sit near the back because the 'regulars' will have their 'own' seats?
Kids that liked to sit at the front at school stood a better chance of being picked to collect the exercise books up and pencils. The ones at the back, bone idle. :)

'The Last Supper' is commonly misunderstood. It was a social event for shoemakers and their staff.

A lot of cobblers in fact.

I know where Treacle is coming from though, a long time ago, as a child, I attended a church service and there was a right kerfuffle resulting in me being handed The Black Spot for sitting in an area reserved for the partially sight.

Yup, the blind pew.
That one's a treasure, Douglas!
