What Is In A Name?

Watching The Chase tonight and the first lady had the name Mhairi which I had never come across before. Googled the name and was amazed to see the Hebrew meaning noted as "bitterness" or "longed-for child". They strike me as weird alternatives.

Common name in Scotland. Can be pronounced Vary (v as in van, ary as in marry)

Not heard of the MP Mhairi Black (bit controversial so been in the news quite a lot)

My point is that the name has 2 definitions/meanings that seem totally at odds with the other.

Zacs, SNP remainer girl - nah, lol.

The grammar in Gaelic means an h sometimes needs to be added to names such as Màiri and their pronunciations change as a result.

"A bheil thu fuar a Mhàiri?" means, "Are you cold Màiri?"

Mhàiri is now a name in its own right but I suspect Gaels would not class it as such.

Regarding the different meanings, there are any number of words spelt the same in different languages but with different meanings.
