yesterday i went swimming in our local pool and paid the oap rrice of 1.40.
at 5.25 pm i was drying off and two young men came in to the room but was told by an attendant the pool was closed as childrens lessons start at 5.30.
one of the men said in pidgin english no problem produced a blue card and said they were kurds and didnt pay anyway.
i am a pensioner and after 50 years of working and paying many thousands of pound in tax etc. naturally felt miffed like so many would be, makes you think!

Many pools are closed for public swimming, period, when children's lessons are in progress. It is quite possible these young Kurds didn't understand what they were being told.
If you're complaining about the fact that they didn't have to pay, even though they haven't worked here for 50 years as you have, well maybe they would pay if they were able to earn the means to do so. As immigrants, they wouldn't be allowed to work, although they may very much want to. No decent person likes to think they're a burden on society, and it doesn't matter what their nationality.

aaaaaah, i think i'm going to have to give up my boring mundane job, for which i get paid pittance, (but helps pay the mortgage) because i want these benefits too. :-(
i'm sulking now...
it's hardly fair on the grafters of society is it? We get nothing. While people who don't work seem to get everything free or cheap! hmmmmm, makes you wonder just WHO are the clever ones eh?
Time for a revolution!!!!!!!!

Why does everyone assume that just because someone is an asylum seeker/immigrant, he or she is an idle good-for-nothing who doesn't want to work?
When you first apply for residence in this country, you aren't allowed to work for a living. You receive a pittance in benefits, much of that in the form of food vouchers and the like, so you can't even choose where to do your shopping.
What you rather these people do - hang around the town centre all day? Lounge around on their backsides doing stuff all? Going out nicking stuff? Or actually getting out and trying to keep themselves fit and healthy and making the most of their time?
Quite honestly, I'd rather my taxes paid for that than the subsidisation of whinging pensioners who think the world owes them a living just because they've been in it a bit longer than the rest of us. The same people who are probably going to be looked after by Kurdish - and other nationality - carers a few years from now.

actually my stepdad, who happens to be 85 has paid into his pension all his working life, and actually i do think we as a nation owe him something as he fought for all our freedom in the second world war.Sorry to be whining on about it but thats the way i feel when he cant get extra special treatment like free swim lessons, and yes he prob. would use them.this bloody country ought to start lookin after its own and stop being such a soft soddin touch to every free loader and his dog!!
i second that scruffcat, i know people who have never worked and they live in nice comfortable flats with thier rent, council tax etc paid for, they get free presciptions, dental treatment, glasses etc!! whereas most of the pensioners i know have worked all thier lives (and ordinary working people on low wages) but they have to find the money to pay thier council tax, mortgage or whatever and they don't get free swims or any such luxuries.
Likewise, I have an elderly, widowed mum, who slaved in factories from the day she left school at the age of 14 until her late retirement at the age of 62. My dad did the same. They've never been wealthy, never qualified for benefits (until my mum became disabled several years ago). Dad died five years ago and Mum is now housebound. But she expects nothing for nothing, and expects to pay for what she does have - because she can. She certainly doesn't come out with the 'I've worked all my life and fought a war for this country' line when she other people getting stuff for free that she has to pay for.
I'm not defending those who can work but won't. I'm defending those who came here seeking the work that many idle beggars refuse to do, but which they can't get because they're not allowed to. Do you understand that - NOT ALLOWED TO WORK? Do you think most people choose to forego every scrap of dignity they have by taking and not being able to return? How many of you would do this? Not many, judging by what I'm reading here, so why do you assume other people would, just because they're foreign?

maybe you're right to a certain percentage saxy_jag, but where i live the immigrants openly boast about how they get everything free, i've even stood at the bus stops and heard them phoning thier friends (on the latest mobile!) how to get the DWP to fill in thier forms and apply for flats, free dental, glasses etc, AND free energy saving lightbulbs for where they live! then go into the chemist for a prescription which would cost a working person over 6.00 for one thing and they get it free! on the back of the allotments where i live there is a community garden where they grow fruit & veg , the immigrants are allowed free access to this and literally pick all the stuff off before anyone else gets there, i'm sorry but i disagree with you saxy_jag , like everyone else on this thread has said (except you) this country ought to look after its own.
Jeez, I just can't believe how racist and narrow-minded you people are.
We have loads of immigrants here too, Allotment, and they get all the same free stuff. We have a major reception centre twenty minutes down the road. You know what? I don't mind. Just like I don't mind the thousands of Asian and Afro Caribbean families here - whose grandparents got the same welcome thirty odd years ago, but who were given a chance and have worked a sight harder and contributed a sight more to this community than some 'British' people I've known.
You're all beginning to form a bit of a broken record now. I haven't read one fresh argument in the whole thread beyond 'they get stuff free and they haven't worked for it, and I don't, and I have." They're here, we're going to help them because a past, elected government signed an agreement that said we would. Get over it, because the only ones who are going to end up miserable over this are you guys.
I don't think I'm gonna say too much more here, because I'll probably get myself banned if I do. Suffice to say I really do hope that some of your carers and doctors in a few years (all hard-working tax payers, of course) turn out to be the very people you're whinging about now. It'll just be a pity I won't be around to see your faces when that happens.
Cheers.

So if you knew you wouldn't be allowed to work in a country you were thinking of heading off to, why bother going? Answer: because you will be looked after regardless.
There are a large number of hardworking British people in this country. There are also a large number of bone idle British people in this country.
There ARE a large number of genuine hard working immigrants in this country who do the mundane work. There ARE also a large number of people who arrive here for a free lunch, and that's the group under the most scrutiny, i.e. the one's who have never given, but are keen to take. If you disagree, change the colour of your spectacles.

Why race? Because the original post made big of the fact that these people were Kurdish? Immigrants? Immigration, by its nature, involves race - citizens of other nations seeking refuge here. If race doesn't come into it, why did the poster feel the need to mention it?
They're immigrants (ie not 'one of us'), therefore they're freeloading. You (collectively) don't know why individuals are here - you just judge them on the fact they are - and many are here for perfectly legitimate reasons.
How many of you would seriously swap your life for one like theirs? Leave your home (and often your family too) behind you and head to a foreign country with nothing, because you're scared for your life? Maybe the fourth or fifth country you've asked for residence in. A country where everyone speaks a language you barely understand and where you have to live four people to a room in a cheap hotel (because very few people actually get council houses, despite what you'd like to believe). Where you have to buy poor quality goods at inflated prices because you only get vouchers to spend at specified shops? Where there's nothing to do all day because you have no job and no money, and where you couldn't work if you wanted to, because you'd be arrested and slung in prison if you did?
Go on then, if their lives are so enviable - you try it! I believe it's quite easy living in continental Europe. From what I hear, their state benefit systems are quite good there too.

You said in an earlier post that you are "not defending those who can work but won't". Do you mean British born residents or immigrants, or both?
If both, then you are admitting that there is such a thing as a freeloading immigrant.
Some immigrants > hardworking
Some immigrants > free lunch
It's not racist to say that some immigrants are simply here for the beer. It's a fact of life and I fail to see how you can defend EVERY single so called 'refuge'.

Oh, and the picture you paint of Britain where we all speak funny, house 4 people in one room, charge a fortune for over priced tat, offer no work or money, or sling you in prison for illegally working, doesn't make it sound very appealing to any would be immigrant.
Makes you wonder why they bother........
Makes you wonder why they bother........
why why why why why why.....WHY does everybody accuse you of being bloody racist over immigration!!!!! i just dont get it its nothing to do with skin colour this is a small island we have underfunded schools ,police, nhsand just about anythin else you can think of that s under funded so why are we lettin these immigrants in.Im sorry i cant come up with flashy statistics regardin future funding of pensions etc etc and how we need people here to work to pay tax blah blah...all i know is most countries like Australia dont let you in if you havent any trade skills sponsorship or accomodation waitin for you.why cant we be more like those countries
