Can somebody tell me if it is etiquette to invite the Vicar & his wife to the Wedding reception after the marriage service or is it just a matter of choice ?

Depends how well you know them bit it is not usually expected (by them).
i believe an invitation is always sent to the vicar or priest who conducts the wedding ceremony , in my experience they tend to say GRACE have their dinner then go home,

I've never known the Vicar to go to the wedding reception. I suppose if you know them very well and they would be invited even if he wasn't conducting the ceremony then yes!
I would agree with crete, any church wedding I have been to, the minister has been at the reception afterwards and has said grace before the meal.

But as far as I have noticed, they never stay long.

I would say it would only be polite to invite them, they might not come, but the offer would be nice.
I went to 4 weddings last year, 3 catholic and one CofE. None of them had the vicar/priest there, nor were they invited. Not saying that is right, just that it is an out of date etiquette if you don't personally know them as a friend.

Anyone who is present at the reception can say grace. In fact it is more often the matre d' or the MC. My aunt did mine and she is a nun.
When I got Married The Vicar was invited to the reception .He Sayed Grace had his meal and left leaving us with a tape of the wedding .god it was terrible hearing what you sound like .After we seperated the ex got the tape
