Probbably cause there used to be 240 old pence to the pound b4 decimaliasion (god dam it could never spell that) but we have decimalised measurment know to 1000 centimeters or millimeters or whatever to the metre but it gets more complicated as there are 30 centimeters or millimeters to a foot.

Also might be because 12 divides up better than 10, ie 10 can only divided once without fractions, whereas 12 can be divided twice. This is one reason why hours are 60 minutes.
