It is made up of a collar that contains a cannister of compressed air & a remote control for you to activate the unit on the dogs collar to emit a shot of freezing cold compressed air under the dogs nose everytime it goes to eat a pile of sh*t.
The good thing is that you can activate it from quite a few feet away from the dog, so you have total control of your dog. It also doesn't hurt the dog in anyway...just surprises it & makes it believe that the sh*t (or whatever you use the unit for) is actually making the explosion & the dog will quickly conclude that it should avoid all turds just incase they explode!
You must use it carefully & responsibly, but I've found it to be invaluable at sorting out dogs behaviour without using any punishment...and they don't associate it with you, they usually look up with a bewildered look on their face & you can then use that as an oppportunity to call the dog back to you & praise him for not eating the sh*t.
The cost of the thing seems quite a lot (160) but I know that you can rent them too.
I think that part of the problem is that modern dog food has stuff added to it to make it tasty for the dog and this is passed through the first dog undigested, making the faeces attractive to subsequent dogs. Eating herbivore faeces is a different issue, the first digester breaks down the grass, absorbs some of the constituents and passes the rest out. This still actually does have a food value (look at what it does to garden plants) and therefore is perceived by the dog as a viable food supplement. Most extreme example of this is rabbits who actually practice refection (look it up, its gross but true) Purplepixie is right and you can dissuade a dog from doing it most of the time but bottom line is its a dog thing. Don't let the dog lick your face and worm often!!

My last bitch used to eat sh1t all the time - full of protein, apparently. The vet said that if a dog food manufacter devised a food that smelt and tasted like sh1t they could make a fortune from sales - the dogs would love it. However, it would be difficult to get people to even consider buying 'Pal with added sh1t flavour'. Much more likely to buy 'Pal with added beans and carrots'!
