In order that they can fulfil their role Godparents need be able to make the declarations and promises in the baptism services, which is why the Church of England requires all Godparents to be baptised themselves and normally to be confirmed as well. That is also why it is not possible for a member of another faith to be a Godparent.
BUT, you can have a, errr, gawd I've forgotten what it is called, my daughter's Godfather was serving abroard when she was baptised and my brother-in-law stood in for him, i've fogotten what the vicar called it. My brotker -on-law took the oath on his behalf. It wasn't proxy but it was something like that.
zig-zag it is a tradition going back to the 1500s and so it is not really getting crazier in this scenario : )) but you could do the job as a born again christian i think.
ahhhhh i clicked thru a few of those tony and i have a feeling it was 'second' don;t know why, but it does sound familiar, i know it is written in my daughters christening bible which is at her house and so i shall ask her to look at it.
