holiday soon to Jersey - a few more q's

Hiya, am going to my jersey holiday soon and i just wondered if anyone knew whether Jersey is cnsidered abroad as far as banks are concerned? i know they use pounds there but wondered if i can just pay for things with my debit card and get money out of the cashpoint without attracting a premium from my bank. I dont really want to take my spending money in cash. Are there many cashpoints there?

Contact your bank and credit card companies so you can be sure.
Lots of cashpoints in Jersey.

I think Jersey is consider "UK" so no problem using normal cashpoints.

I drew out money with my cards in Jersey with no problem.

Note they do have their own bank notes and coins (same denomination as ours) and they mix and match them with normal UK money.

So you might pay for something with a UK �20 note, but get change back part in Jersey money, part in UK money.

It is not a problem and nobody seems to mind.

Just need to try to spend your Jersey money before you leave (although some places in the UK take it).

They still have pound notes. There is also currency from Guernsey so you may get that in your change too. Make sure you look at the bank note carefully as the colours are different to ours and the colours are different between the islands! I'd get rid of allJersey/Guernsey money before you leave as I have never had it accepted over here

I took the first advice and phoned up both my banks who both seemed to have a lot of trouble knowing the answer (abbey and lloyds)
anyway, after a bit of scrabbling around they both told me any cashpoint transaction will attract a "foriegn exchange" charge PLUS a standard charge of between 1 - 2.99%
Any debit card trasactions will attract a flat fee of �1 for lloyds and abbey couldn't tell me!

I'm so glad i rang now, after just assuming i could take money out of the cashpoint without penalty there (it being in the british isles and all)

I think i'm just going to have to get cash out here and stuff it in my knickers or something!

I think you have spoken with someone who has got it wrong -I travel regularly to the Channel Islands and its the same as travelling to London -no charges whatsoever.

hmmm, well they were in jaipur, so maybe! i don't know who else to ask, although i guess i could go in the branch I wonder if things have changed recently - their healthcare arrangements changed in April this year for british citizens

I was not charged for taking out money in Jersey.

I think your phone advice was wrong.

When I used to work for one of the major banks, we used to get asked about making payments to the Channel Islands and to the Isle of Man. The reason was that an international payment had a hefty fee associated with it, whereas a domestic payment could be made for free. We too spent a while trying to figure out the answer and then established that it is classed as the UK and therefore the same rules as home apply. You should have no problems using your card in Jersey and you should not be charged for the privilige.
