Hello, I am currently trying to report a convicted sex offender to facebook. However, they will not even look over the report unless I can provide documentation proving that they are, as stated - a convicted sex offender.

Documentation can be either:
*a link to a listing in a national sex offender registry
*a link to an online news article
*court document uploaded to their form

Now. If I wanted to get my hands on the original court transcript, it was going to cost me £350, so I haven't got it. I don't have anything else that could be used. The uk sex offenders register is unavailable to the public, and the story wasn't in the news.. What can I do? I know that this man is who he is because my sister has had contact with him via his facebook profile.

He was convicted in 2008, is on the sex offenders register for 5 years.. HOW can I prove this to facebook?!

can you contact the police and ask for their help?

i have to ask, but are convicted paedophiles banned from using facebook? or is this person using it to get closer to children?
If you told them you were going to take the story to one of the national newspapers they might pay more heed to you.
Is he attempting to groom others on facebook, is he committing any crimes now? Can you not get a newspaper article for when he was convicted?
my apologies, i realise you didnt say paedophile .

so my question stands for sex offender
She said 'sex offender' not 'Paedophile'
i know ummm, i speed read it as its something that ive spoken about recently elswhere and i mixed up.
and i found the answer to my question
"You will not use Facebook if you are a convicted sex offender. "

http://www.facebook.com/terms.php

so i go back to my initial answer of speak to the police.
I was still typing when you corrected yourself....

Phone the police Lou..

Oohhh massive response! Thank you everyone. Yes, a quick search brings this up: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=15160

Unfortunately there were no newspaper reports about the story and I've searched all over the internet to no avail. I have a couple of statements on my PC but they aren't signed and were from pre-conviction so would be useless to prove that he WAS convicted!

I will add that he is a paedophile. but also other charges were put against him which brought him to become a convicted sex offender. Facebook should make this process a lot easier :(

Will call the police now, thank you everyone!
Let us know what they say.
good luck, Lou.

as i said i have come across similar recently and a call to the police by the concerned person helped loads and ensured people were warned
How do they stop someone from going on FaceBook though. Ed stuggles with banned users on this site..??
"Facebook should make this process a lot easier"

If they did people would be getting others facebook accounts suspended out of spite, they have to insist on some sort of proof.

(I'm in no way saying that you are trying to get an account suspended through spite BTW, just pointing out what the result would be if it were too easy)
Chuck...how do they manage to ban someone though?

ChuckFickens - what I meant by that, is that I'd have thought facebook might have access to the relevant information to be able to identify convicted sex offenders with some information requested. ie, I can give them a name, an address and a case reference number, which I would have thought would take them to the relevant 'bit' in the sex offenders register.
However, it won't even let me proceed and submit the report form without either a link to the information I posted in my original post, or documentation. So I can't even put forward that I DO know but I don't have the docs.. does that make sense?

Ummmm - I think big websites such as facebook can trace users via their ISP or.. some number thingy which links to your interwebz connection, and PC's which you've logged onto the site via, so if they were to sign up as a different user, it would still link back to their PC.

I've just called the police, the contact centre have taken down loads of info and are going to get in touch with the police that were initially involved in the case and then they'll either get in touch with me for more info, or will go straight to facebook.

HORRAH! Thank you everyone :) Useful post for others who are looking for this info too - CALL THE POLICE!
Lou....what if he registers to FB from a library? Then the next time he logs on he's in an internet cafe in a different town. Then he logs on from his house, then his cousins...then his mates?

How are they going to catch him?

Just beware that he can open another account pretty quickly xx

Ummmm - I know what you're saying, but I'll be satisfied this first time. If he does do as you've said (I wouldn't put it past him!) then he seriously needs to get a life. He needs one anyway. meh.. :)
ummm, youre right, if he really wants to get around it Im sure he can. But then thats the risk he takes, the police are aware and he may have restictions set by the courts too and i suppose its entirely possible he could end up in prison if he breaches conditions
The point is that by being forced to register a new name each time he logs on from a different internet connection he will not be able to build a persona behind one id, or gain rapport with people by using one id.
He will have to use a different id each time, which rings alarm bells.
Go to the website of your local police service, on there you will find the e-mail addresses of your local community constables. E-mail them and ask them for some advice and they should get back to you within 10 days.
