Islam forbids alcohol - that joy is reserved for paradise.
Allah’ s curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol.
The one who distils it;
The one for whom it has been distilled;
The one who drinks it;
The one who transports it;
The one for whom it has been brought;
The one who serves it;
The one who sells it;

separate out alcohol and intoxication.....big difference.
By the way, Moses went up the mountain (yes the Koran picks up the OT and one of the principle reasons that Christianity, Judaism and Islam are related).
He came down to the expecting Israelites. "I have good news and bad news from him upstairs, Yahweh/Allah."
"The good news is the He has reduced the number of Commandments to 10. The bad news is that adultery is still there."

No, I don’t think alcohol was forbidden gradually. Because there are “Ahadith” that tells that when these verses about Alcohol came then few companions of Prophet (pbuh) were sitting somewhere and drinking. But there and then they threw away their drinks and broke the pot that has wine etc in that.
Anyone who believes it is intoxication that is forbidden and not alcohol should go to an Arab and ask him what does “Khamar” means. And one more beauty of Islam is that language itself has not changed a bit in over 1400 years and anyone can understand every single word. Otherwise words become obsolete very quickly. Of course Islam does not stop only on alcohol and does forbid anything that will damage your health, Society and family. In that regard Islam forbids Heroin and all other drugs as well. Otherwise one might say that where in Quran it say do not use Heroin. So Quran globalised it by referring to the effect.
Daisy, Topic of Virgins needs detail. As for wives, let me ask you one question. How many girl friends or mistresses are allowed? Is there any limitation? People think about Islam allowing 4 wives but they do not understand that In reality Islam has put a limit on it of maximum 4 and even that if you can be just between them. And don’t forget before that there was no limit and no rights either.
Quran 4:3 ………..Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

Keyplus. Do not understand your answer. Girlfriends, mistresses? Give details of virgins. We are trying to understand. Why are men supposed to be so different from women? Women are to be subservient? A man needs a sexual outlet when his wife is pregnant? Women have always tried extremely hard to care for their families after losing their men in war.
It is very much a debate about semantics, key plus......they did permit alcohol early on and then the issue of intoxicants and prayers came in, followed by comments about sugar, and the fermented products - one must remember that the Qu'ran evolved and wasn't a sudden production by one author. Mohammed put the skids in at the end to re-emphasise the avoidance - and this was an interpreation of the Qu'ran not the writing of it, albeit a powerful interpretation.
For reference, I would recommend http://islam.about.com/od/health/f/alcohol.htm though somewhere I have some of the Arabic verses stored away, inc the running of wine in streams in heaven
