Does anyone think that it could be possible there might be an afterlife that has nothing to do with God or religion? because it has always seemed to me that if there is nothing then it has all been a waste of time. And as for the idea of judgement day, heaven and hell, that was drummed into me at primary school, I quit believing that fairy tale at a very early age, but I would just like to believe there is something so that life was n`t all for nothing.

mmmm...all I know is I do NOT want to come back as a chicken...
Life is for living, the rest will take care of itself. Infinite recycling. infinite possibilities. :)
//Does anyone think that it could be possible there might be an afterlife that has nothing to do with God or religion//

Yes, I do. However, in saying 'so that life wasn't all for nothing' you seem to infer that anything that might occur after death is some sort of reason for living - and I don't think it is.
Philosophically, there doesn't HAVE to be a "reason" for everything.

There are lots of things for which there is simply NO reason ...

Life, Wasps, Aubergines, Croydon, ...
"it has always seemed to me that if there is nothing then it has all been a waste of time"

living is the longest thing you'll ever do, enjoy it.

Naomi, my thoughts are that the main reason for existence would be to experience an afterlife, if there is one of course.
"the main reason for existence would be to experience an afterlife"

wrong.
JJ Croydon? What about Costco?
COSTCO...good for danish pastries though....they can make life worth living at times...
LOL, ladybirder ...

Well, Costco is only on the outskirts.

And I suppose I should make some allowance for the slightly better parts of South Croydon.

Or, as it is known ... "So Cro".

JJ. I believe there is a reason for everything...we may not know what it is now but if there is an afterlife, wouldn`t it be great to get all the answers.
no reason for marmite. no reason whatsoever.
You can believe whatever you wish to believe.

It's not like anyone can prove you wrong.
there is a reason for marmite
I quite like Marmite.

At Costco (in Croydon, LOL) you can get it in plastic tubs, instead of those little jars with the awkward shoulders.
oldnitro, since no one knows, I can't say you're wrong, but if you think about what you've said, that would indicate that someone or something, other than nature, establishes natural law - and I don't believe that.
No

To survive death you first have to survive life.

Go take a look around a stroke ward or other brain trauma cases.

People can lose their personalities, their memories their very identities.

If you haven't got a soul that can survive life how can you have one that survives death?
oldnitro how can you say that if there is no afterlife, this one has been a waste of time? Surely you should be living this life for what it is and not what you may, or may not, get at the end of it.

I do not know if there is an afterlife for me but in the meantime I certainly do not consider the life I am living a waste of time.
ok, marmite gives me reason to hate.
Jake, when you look around a stroke ward, how can you be sure that what you think you're seeing is really there? Yes, strokes damage physical bodies, but how can you possibly know whether they also affect thought processes and emotions. You can't.
