A New Nativity.
When all those long, long years ago a child came down to earth below,
To save the likes of you and me from evil, harm and misery,
Do you suppose that even then, there were some doubting, heedless men
Who, rather than believe the word, just turned their backs and never heard?
You see, today we all recall, the baby in the ox's stall.
The ass, the stables, shepherds, Kings, - all ancient, rural, rustic things.
But what if, here, this very night, it happened....on the Isle of Wight
Would we rejoice and all be merry? Would we dash off and catch the ferry?
If Christ was born in Walthamstow, would builders drop their tools and go?
Would Wapping printers stop their presses? Would supermodels ditch their dresses?
In Dundee and in rural Kent, would shepherds, by an angel sent
Walk miles to see a newborn child, whose mother, unmarried, although mild
Had given birth to a baby boy, not at the Dorchester or Savoy,
But in a garage, there's the rub, round the back of the local pub.
And yet I like to think that we, despite the e-mail and DVD
Would know to go, when star shone bright, and make that journey through the night
To see the child who saves the world, in some old oil drum safely curled.
The nativity for this century. Would anyone out there like to come?

Aha Sandy, we have found you out at last, you are by your own admission driven by the devil! (figures of speech notwithstanding). So... If you are not struck by lightning or by some other means quickly consigned to the fiery furnace we will know that either, a. god does not exist or b. god and the devil are the same entity, or c. god is impotent, or d.god doesn't care, or e. ( I am having difficulty finding a way to express this without offending many souls) god does not exist ..there I've said it though it grieves me sorely.
@Maggie - Once again, the assumption that this faith, this belief in the absence of any evidence whatsoever, this fairy tale that we have taught our kids should be considered the correct version of reality - And in that reality all naysayers are blind,wilful, sinful or downright evil and will suffer the consequences.
All of which is predicated on a narrative from a book that we know to have been heavily edited, that has no contemporaneous facts or sources to aid in verification, that we have to have faith in - belief in the absence of evidence. And its this patent rubbish that generations have instilled into the young believers, who, mostly unthinkingly, pass on the same narrative to their kids in turn.
We would expect, I think, people and kids to exercise critical thinking to an problem or life issue that confronted them - I would like to think that we allow for evidence based decisions - No wonder then that some struggle to understand basic science, given the cognitive dissonance they start from.
No, I would not care to come. I can think of few things worse than attending a live birth surrounded by a bunch of true believers. Let me know how it goes.
