I recently went to a Holy Shrine in Bosnia at a place called Medjugorje. I went with my friend (who is a Catholic) to scatter her Dad's ashes around the statue of Our Lady. (She appeared here to some children apparantly in the 80's.) Her Dad had been there 23 times and was a devout Catholic. I am not Catholic but went with her for support.
We climbed up 'Apparition Hill' to the statue (swealtering heat of 42degrees) and she started spreading his ashes, whilst I looked out over the horizon, feeling quite relaxed and calm.
A few moments later I saw a man gesturing to my friend and she came over to me (I had the bags) and took out her sarong to put over her shoulders, as this bloke had 'rightly pointed out' that it was a sin for a woman to have bare shoulders in the vicinity of such holiness.
He then hissed at me to do the same, as I had on a string top. I obliged, as this was my friend's journey and very important to her, although I felt like telling him where to get off to be honest.
Of all the petty, misoginistic, pathetic and ridiculous idiosyncracities of religion...why shoulders? Who made this one up? I mean come on..... I'm sure Jesus and the statue of Our Lady had better things to worry about that whether my shoulders were covered!

I went to an Indian wedding many years ago and had to keep my head covered with a scarf.
I do not go into a church without covering my head. Also cover my shoulders. But why?
Daisy, men have made the rules because since Adam proved himself weak they see woman as the temptress - and themselves as the innocent victims - and this is why Le Chat was obliged to cover her shoulders, and taking it even further, why many women are condemned to live their lives beneath the shroud of the burka. This is the wisdom of the all-powerful man whom, it appears, is eager to control others, but cannot control himself. Make sense of it if you can - because I can't.
whatever it is, I'd be respectful of local practices when going to a holy place.
Easy really. Men have no self control and therefore blame women.
If God wanted for us to smoke we'd have been born with a chimney and and if God wanted for us to be show offs we'd have been born . . . erm . . . nevermind . . . :o/
If men are so weak, why do women follow their rules - are they even weaker ?
Canary, historically women have not had much choice in the matter. They're certainly physically weaker - and where independence is concerned, culturally, their unavoidable role in bearing and rearing children has put them at rather a disadvantage. Life is not a level playing field.
if you make the rules, laws, earn the money, have the power, then it's hardly likely that you will allow women to take over. Women are not weak, just unlucky to have many men in the past, and to some extent now ruling the roost. As to covering up that would be sensible in this situation. I see many women in the capital who wear the veil, burkha, hijab, as a retrograde step for all women, and even if it's their choice, and i am not convinced, then it's usually for their menfolk to say yes or no.
