new testament vs old testament.

Hi guys having never read them...was wondering if someone can help sum up the relationship between these two books?
Is it something along the lines of....
Old Testament.
Moses was told the 10 commandments and to spread the message.
New testament.
Jesus was sent as no one beleived the first book and was sent to atone for everyones sins?
obviously that is very basic but is that why there is an old and new book?

The new one is a continuation of the old and only aquires its significence because it is supposed to be the fulfilment of a prophesy but that is not accepted by the Jews. For them Jesus was just another prophet .
However the message in the NT is as sandy said a softer version .
If you want a brief version read a couple of childrens' books .

Christianity didn’t exist within Jesus’ lifetime. Jesus was a devout Jew who told his followers to keep the law – the Jewish law. Like all Jews, he believed in the first book – and I don’t believe he ever intended the second to be written. In fact, I think he would be absolutely appalled at what has been promulgated in his name. In all of history, his reputation has been abused above all others – quite abominably. I genuinely feel very sorry for him.
Maggie, it’s a simple matter to write a story that appears to confirm the fulfillment of ancient prophecies – and if you are susceptible to the influence of those who appear to know what they’re talking about, it’s even easier to believe it. The truth is, no one knows the truth any more than you do. When they have only the same information at their disposal as you have, why would they? But back to the book. Had the writers, and numerous subsequent editors, not made ridiculous and thoughtless errors in attempting to portray Jesus as something he was not, it might have been worthy of consideration. As it is, it is not.
I’ve said it many times before, but I’ll say it again – if there is an almighty creator God, it is not the spiteful God of Abraham. His necessarily sycophantic followers have the wrong bloke!

The Jews expect their messiah to be a descendant of the Royal House of David - not a supernatural being, but a man – so they are not waiting for simply a spiritual saviour in the sense that the Christians believe Jesus was the saviour – but for someone who will lead them in a practical way – a king. According to the New Testament (which gives two conflicting accounts of Joseph’s lineage) Joseph was descended from the House of David – but since Christians believe that Jesus was the son of God rather than the son of Joseph, they cannot in all honesty claim that the prophecies have been fulfilled because in that event, as God’s son, Jesus was not a descendant of the House of David.
Personally, I think Jesus was Joseph’s son, and possibly the rightful heir to the throne of Israel. He lived in turbulent and dangerous times, and the true story, which has been shamefully altered over the years to fit the agenda of the Christian church, is one, not of religion, but of politics.

Cheers Naomi. It is very interesting regardless of beliefs!
your point about Jesus being a deity rather than son of Joseph...doesn't that mean he will never be 'real' unless of course he miraculously appears and isn't born of women?
And are there any Jews now who could claim to be from the house of David or is that lineage impossible to prove and therefore they will never have their saviour? (i really must read the bibles!)

Not quite sure what you mean. I think Jesus was real, but I don’t think he was supernatural. I think he was Joseph’s son, so as a mere mortal I wouldn’t expect him to reappear at all. He’s been dead for 2000 years.
As for the current descendants of the House of David, it’s all a bit complicated. Perhaps this will help. If you want to fast-track, scroll right down to ‘Jewish Messianism’ and ‘Modern Davidic Descendants’.
