Can the dead talk to us?

Something a bit different to talk about. Last night's offering from 4thought TV.

The presenter mentions controlled experiments that suggest it is a reality – personally I don’t know of any experiments that are verified - but he also says he seems to have a faculty of mind that takes his awareness beyond his physical five senses to become aware of things that others simply cannot be aware of. Is that possible?

Mind you it was the seventies, my experimental period.

Communicating with the dead is logically impossible and people like this are just praying on those weakened by grief.

Not if they are buried 6 feet under. People 'exist' as constructs in our brains and if we know them well we unconciously guess how they would react in certain situations and also what they would say. When a colleague of mine died unexpectedly, he still 'existed' in my mind for several months and gradually faded as my mental model was no longer sustained by the living person. I think that some people confuse this virtual 'being' with the real person.

yes they can. My beliefs are that their bodies, either cremated or buried, are just shells left over from this life and our subconscious can pick up random thoughts like a transister if we allow it. Its happened to me and totally believe it because what I picked up and related to the person it was meant for was not random and could not have been guessed by me,ever. On the other hand these charlatans that take money for contacting the dead are just con artists.

There have been many claims on behalf of mediums of the years. None have stood up to serious scrutiny, and in all of the properly controlled trials that I know of, none were ever able to demonstrate anything remotely resembling a true connection with the spirit world.

I watched the link, and sceptic that I am, I took the view that C4 had given a medium 2 minutes of prime time free publicity....

We have to be careful as people beleive it and we dont want to hurt their feeling and others are making money from it so we cant ruin their livelihood.
