Can we please put aside our petty and pointless religious differences just for one day and remember the fallen, who gave their lives so that we may have the freedom to discuss such topics openly?

Have just read your post Zacs-Master. Good idea but can we not put them aside every day?

Well said, zacs

Nonsense! Continuing discussions here for the rest of the day doesn't mean that contributors have forgotten the fallen any more than continuing discussions in news, or any other section of AB, means that contributors there have forgotten the fallen.
Naomi has a point.
Perhaps ALL differences religious or otherwise should be put aside today, on this site and every other internet site. Join as one and observe the day.
Plenty of time to dispute religion, news topics, health issues, crossword answers and recipe's!!

I just thought it would show some respect. A visible confirmation that 'we remember them'. Just for one day. Is that too much to ask?
Why has it gone from being a day of quiet respect for the fallen to this loud, jingoistic deification of all things military.
Question Author
Jd, I just thought that as the relatives and descendants find the act of rememberance through religious ceremony comforting, the R&S section would be the place best suited to demonstrate our respect.
If you intend posting your request in all the other sections too, that's fine by me.
Question Author
I refer you to my post at the same time as yours.
I can see the angle you have come from and your reason for posting in this section, as it is religion that gives people comfort on days like this. I wasnt disputing your intentions, more expanding your point that today, the day to day issues we all love to dispute and argue over should take a back seat.
Question Author
I'm not sure the ed (or his bank) would agree jd. I think a small gesture on behalf of the R&S contributors (myself included) would be appropriate.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that lest I am accused of the very act I'm trying to suspend.
Wars toady are mostly the product of religious beliefs. Personally I will heighten my criticism of religion to honor the fallen.
I don't think religion played a great part in WW1 & WW2. We do not 'honour the fallen' for their devotion to religion but for their sacrifice in the name of freedom both personal and intellectual. I think some of those 'fallen' would be disapointed if they knew that their sacifice was being used as an excuse to suppress freedom of speech albeit only for one day. Zacs, you don't have to read these posts if they offend your sensitivities.
Hitler thought he was a god.
Did anyone else?
It would have been nice for posters to refrain from posting for 2 minutes.............but that didn't happen.
zAC, your heart was in the right place :)
I agree with Zacs.

But its kind of difficult to forget about religion, today of all days, when a lot of our British dead and injured served in Iraq and Afghanistan, where religion paid, and is still paying, a huge part in the conflict.

If the more misguided and unintelligent minority amongst the Muslims could just just concentrate on acting in a civilised fashion, perhaps our brave lads and lasses could come home. They need to understand that you don't give a freedom to one group in society, by taking it away from another.

Anybody who is still unsure of why the West is battling these people need only look at that little girl who was shot in the head by her fellow Muslims. just because she was campaigning for girls to have an education, something that the rest of the world thinks is entirely normal.
Jom, //I think some of those 'fallen' would be disapointed if they knew that their sacifice was being used as an excuse to suppress freedom of speech albeit only for one day.//

My sentiments exactly.

Zacs, //I just thought that as the relatives and descendants find the act of rememberance through religious ceremony comforting,//

Yet again, we are being asked to respect religion, but it might be remembered that for many the result of two World Wars was the abandonment of faith.
