Which Religious Philosophy Could Be For You ?
45 Answers
Leaving out the god factor which religious philosophy is for you ?
I have in the past read up on all the major religions and I refute all their gods but have found some of their other beliefs, especially concerning a sixth sense , fit in with my own experience of the world. What's your's ?
So far Buddhism is the top of my list but I haven't any first hand knowledge apart from visiting the odd temple.

Combine the non-religious good points from all religions (even Islam has some) and call it Sapienism.
Service shall be every sunday, gathering at least 6 family members together for dinner and a chinwag, followed by a drinkie and to help anyone having problems.
The icon for the Sapienism religion shall the Buddha statue and shall not be worshipped but is there to remember one's obligation to be kind and considerate to your fellow man.

I chose Buddhism partly because they believe each one of us release and receive moral energy. A bit like we detect the feelings within a group without a word being said, or entering a room and picking up a feeling of good or evil. That there is something outside ourselves , an extra sense.
Our thoughts and actions are constantly being given off as moral energy.
" A good cause ,a good effect: a bad cause a bad effect" They call it Karma.
So we individually and collectively influence all others and our surroundings.
Sorry if I have got it all wrong but it makes sense to me that we have a direct continuous effect through our thoughts and actions rather than relying on imaginary entities. Maybe any ABer buddhists can explain it better.

Ive known Buddhists who believe that crippled people are suffering now for bad actions commited in a past life. The worse the disability, the more evil they must have been. My nephew was born severley disabled and I find this philosophy abborant. Its similar to William Roaches recent remarks that sex abuse victims bought it on themselves.

Waldo You are right it was invented but so is are all religions. They are invented to satisfy the desire/need of many/most people to understand
the world.
In addition it plays another important role it gives power to those who preach it. I think Emperor Constantine summed it up when he imposed Christanity on the Roman Empire, he is reported to have said
" Christianity has more power than a 100 Roman Legions " .
There is no evidence that he became a Christian himself but used it to exercise power.

nailit I don't know much about Buddhism's after death beliefs, and what little I know seems contradictory as there appears to be so many versions.
However that ridiculous remark by Roache is also repeated in the bible
in different forms // Sins of the fathers being carried on into their sons etc.// I believe it is in Isaiah and said by Jesus himself.
It's all bunkham IMO but the very basic beliefs of karma whilst we are alive in Buddhism has some merits.

chakka I'm using the words they use but as I understand it , it is the radiated energy generated by our thoughts and actions. It is a force of some sort .
As you know we can already measure the electrical activity from our brains without making a direct physical connection. More recently some disabled people have been able to operate a computer through their brain waves by this method.
As you know the more agitated we become the greater is this brain activity
.Karma is something like this we are radiating and receiving this energy which influences our surroundings.
Whether it is anything like radio activity as we know it , is another matter .
I should think , if it exists , it is something totally different. The nearest I can come to it ,is telepathy which is experienced by some people but can not be turned on/off at will.

@Modeller. To be honest, I find the notion of karma just as unlikely as the notion of an afterlife.
"As you know we can already measure the electrical activity from our brains without making a direct physical connection."
Not sure I understand your meaning - care to expand a little?
"More recently some disabled people have been able to operate a computer through their brain waves by this method"
- But usually by using some sort of Brain-Computer Interface ; Electrodes in a cap, that kind of thing.
Not by some sort of energy transfer we are unaware of though- how it is done is perfectly understandable by physics.
Your comments about karma being some sort of "moral energy" sounds a little bit like Jainism, to me.Not something I subscribe to, because there is no objective evidence to support it.
I cannot recall ever seeing any evidence to suggest that telepathy is an actual phenomenon, myself. It certainly cannot be explained by physics, biochemistry or biology....

modeller, there is no evidence of any energy radiated from our brains. If there were, that radiation would have been classified by now. I think 'energy' is probably the most misused word by pseudoscientists, quacks, believers in the soul and the afterlife and so on. It seems that they, like you, don't know what it means.
chakka Did I say I know what it means ? Try not to be rude !
I said what the Buddhists believe. Try reading an answer before knocking it .

Incidently they can measure magnetic waves 5mm above the skin in the area of the heart and are currently testing where it can be used above the brain.
//modeller, there is no evidence of any energy radiated from our brains. If there were, that radiation would have been classified by now. //
So that proves conclusively it will never be detected does it ?

Karma is nothing more than saying you reap what you sow. Christmas Humphreys was a leading figure in bringing Buddhism to England, he became a High Court Judge at The Old Bailey. When he sentenced a man he said "I want you to clearly understand that you are not being punished for[i what you have done, your punishment comes about [i]by] what you have done." A subtle distinction.
cont The Higgs Boson would never have been found left to you.

No there isn't ! It's a philosophy which I said had IMO had some merit.
// I cannot recall ever seeing any evidence to suggest that telepathy is an actual phenomenon, myself. It certainly cannot be explained by physics, biochemistry or biology....//
Quite right but there has been anecdotal evidence over many years and for those who have experienced it directly or witnessed it directly it is very real. However it is a random experience and can not be tested. So quite rightly it is unproven . Unfortunately there are many charlatans and gullible people who destroy any chance of a proper evaluation.
