Is This Appropriate First Minister Of Scotland Acts As Witness At Gay Marriage

I have to admit to being a bit shocked that Nicola Sturgeon would act as a witness in Scotlands first lesbian marriage. I think that is inappropriate surely she should be impartial I think her decision to stand as witness is fundamentally wrong there is no mention that she is a friend of the couple just the fact that it is the first and she is first minister

She is being impartial - she's attending a ceremony that occurs every day between couples.
I think it's quite appropriate and shows the human touch that she's attending such a momentous and historic occasion.

Why should she be 'impartial'.....and what is your particular definition of the word?

I'm not convinced that I'd want any sort of Politician at my wedding, unless they were friend or family, but the couple concerned must have been happy for her to attend theirs.

I have no problem with a politician attending a wedding. Many have done so in the past, and many will do isoin the future.

I cannot see how it affects impartiality in any way.

It's a wedding...they are legal. There are people who are for marriage equality and there are people who are against it. For her to remain 'impartial' she would have to refuse all further wedding invitations (gay or straight) during her term of office.

And what would that achieve?

the labour party tried that in the 1980s. it didn't work; a disparate collection of minorities will never add up to a majority.
