If a referendum was held on whether or not to reintroduce the death penalty, how would you vote?
What moral basis would dictate your choice?

Are life experiences not relevant then Mamy?
Another point has just come to mind.
Someone mentioned crimes for which the bible allows a death sentence. The one that stands out is
'The one sin that can never be forgiven or the one sin that is so bad it is not just a sin it is an Abomination unto God' What is it?
Male Homosexuality .
No but for mass terrorism, yes.
EDDIE, will have to pull you up there m8, as an ex Christian I know this verse well. The unforgivable sin is blaspheming the holy spirit.
I don't think a single person on this thread that has said 'yes' has said for all murderers and certainly not the ones who had a moment of rage. It would be for the minority and those known not only to be 100% guilty but 100% beyond redemption. Brady, Peter Sutcliffe and Ian Huntley are examples that fit in that category for me.
Me too Prudie - and you can add Lee Rigby's killers to that list.
yes that would be right, Brady especially should have been hanged.
Yes nearly added that one Naomi.
Prudie, I get the impression that we're supposed to have some sort of compassion for these monsters - or at least care about the prison conditions they're compelled to suffer, but I don't. I just don't.
However EDDIE, Theland has asked a question asking on what moral basis we dictate our choices. (and specifically the death penalty)
Not surprisingly, the majority of answers have centered on serial killers. However, if people would stop and observe for a moment, this post if in Religion and Spirituality. And Theland is a born again type Christian, meaning that he endorses the biblical codes for punishment. Some have tempted (cant be bothered to go back through the posts now...read them all for ursef) to say that the execution codes were for the Old Testament.
St Paul in the *NEW* testament says that homosexuals deserve the death penalty.
(scripture supplied upon request...because ive had enough of this nonsense for one night)
//Prudie, I get the impression that we're supposed to have some sort of compassion for these monsters//
You aint got that from me Naomi...
To all of you who say no, and I would not wish it on any one of you, I bet you would soon change your mind if one of your loved ones was murdered.
Yes they are, some of us tell our life stories here and some don't.

That wasn't the point I was making.

I'll leave it, given my answer.
how about the custom in some Arab countries where a convicted murderer is given into the hands of the victim's family for whatever punishment they feel appropriate?

Great idea, think about it for a while!
//To all of you who say no, and I would not wish it on any one of you, I bet you would soon change your mind if one of your loved ones was murdered. //
That's why we have laws and not anarchy!
Totally understand the sentiments, totally disagree with capitol punishment.
Venator, Sharia law allows for the payment of Blood Money or Diya
This means that a murderer can buy his way out of punishment by paying sufficient money to the victim's family.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diya_(Islam)
Typically the amount of Diya to be paid depends on the sex of the person who was killed, a woman's life is worth only 50% of a man .
Also Diya is only supposed to be paid if the victim's family agree. But in practice if a very wealthy and important man kills someone , a Royal Prince for example , so much pressure can be put on the family that they are forced to accept. It is generally known that at least one member of the Saudi Royal family has killed several people and had the families forced to accept Diya. He has literally got away with murder.
Not only is a woman worth less than a man , a Muslim is worth 4 to 16 times more than a non Muslim , from the link
Human Rights Watch and United States' Religious Freedom Report note that in sharia courts of Saudi Arabia, "The calculation of accidental death or injury compensation is discriminatory. In the event a court renders a judgment in favor of a plaintiff who is a Jewish or Christian male, the plaintiff is only entitled to receive 50 percent of the compensation a Muslim male would receive; all other non-Muslims (Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Animists, Atheists) are only entitled to receive one-sixteenth of the amount a male Muslim would receive".[3][28][29]
it doesn't half get complicated deciding who to kill or not!!
