Why do many religions have strong opinions on sexual behaviour? I know they often have strong opinions about what food we eat and how many times a day or week we pray, but sex seems to set off a very powerful reaction. There seems to be a view that anything pleasurable is wicked; but surely god (if there is such a being) gave us the sense of taste and the ability to feel pleasure. Why then do the religious bosses disapprove of so much?

Nailit - don't split hairs.
Im not splitting hairs, im pointing out that you were wrong @ 18:07.
You then felt the need to correct yourself @ 21:45 and have now got the hump because it was pointed out to you that Paul himself was celibate and encouraged others to be the same.
As did Jesus.
There is a difference between encouragement and making it a rule, a doctrine.
//There is a difference between encouragement and making it a rule, a doctrine.//
//Saint Paul described celibacy as the doctrine of Devils//

Just admit that you were wrong and have done with. No shame in it.
On the subject of celibacy ("brides of Christ" and all that) I wonder what purer minds than mine would make of Berninini's sculpture "The Ecstasy of St Teresa".
Bernini.

Apologies, signor.
Yes I was wrong. I order to devote more time to the life of evangelism, celibacy was encouraged, but marriage was never frowned upon.
Now there is a dogma of celibacy, most notably in the RC church.
But do you know Nailit, I can use broad brush strokes quite legitimately in this and other discussions as many do, and it is rather tedious when you nit pick over the detail that adds nothing to the discussion and in fact turns it into a cross examination. Totally unnecessary.
Theland, nailit wasn't nit-picking. Your claim was wholly inaccurate.
Sex and religion . . . OMG!
Haa! Don't think about it. It'll only make you go all funny. ;o)
I was looking for a connection and that is all that came to mind.

One night she hollered out 'Sweet Jesus' and I forbade her from ever going to the cantina without me again.
I'm sure the whole celibacy thing was simply the result of a misreading of an early text being copied out by a slightly myopic monk-scribe; he wrote the word 'celibate' when it should have been celebrate sex!
Naomi - point taken, but surely you don't think I was trying to deliberately mislead?
Control the sex, control the people. Besides, many obsessively religious, have suppressed and often deviant sexual preferences. Speaking broadly.
I think you are right David.
Theland, I didn’t suggest you were trying to mislead. Your error does, however, demonstrate what can happen when you choose to read the bible selectively – which is what we were talking about the other day. In short, you are unaware of much of its content - and that matters.

David, //many obsessively religious, have suppressed and often deviant sexual preferences.//

That’s debatable – but the Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) do an interesting line in underwear, designed, among other things, to make life ..err .. uninteresting. ;o)
