Perhaps they have but if you check Pew statistics on prayer you’ll find a similar number of people pray regularly anyway so I don’t think this indicates a sudden upsurge in prayer. It’s just an indication of what people are currently praying for. Had the world been hit by some other disaster no doubt prayers in similar numbers would have been offered for that.

I don't think prayer has ever helped the cause being prayed for, but I do think it can help the person praying deal with the situation if they believe that sort of thing. (I don't.)

Religion requires obedience and acceptance of authority and promises that it already knows the answers to life's questions. Most in the scientific establishment have a worldview that includes a metaphysical prohibition, so not completely open minded.
Christians if they are thoughtful do not rely on blind faith, but science is an important part of their worldview.
