During an impassioned sermon about death and final judgement, the pastor said forcefully, "Each member of this church is going to die and face judgement." Glancing down at the front pew, he noticed a man with a big smile on his face - the man was called Nailit. The minister repeated his point louder. "Each member of this church is going to die and face...

Theland - // Hearing voices, seeing visions, anything in fact, that contravenes scripture is poison. //

You'd better have a word with the usual suspects I mentioned then - they all heard voices and saw visions.

Who gives you bragging rights on what is and what is not 'poison'?
Theland, //Hearing voices, seeing visions, anything in fact, that contravenes scripture//

How can it contravene scripture? Any number of people in the bible experienced those things - including St Paul - and Jesus had a conversation with what could only have been the ghosts of people long dead. Do you actually know what you’re talking about?
Of course I don't know what I'm talking about when in a conversation with such elite sages such as yourselves.
But what do I know?
Nothing obviously.
I just thought, erroneously it seems, after following Jesus Christ, that His instructions were the code to live by .
But, I shall continue to stumble on my way, and take the flak that is promised.
(Oh yes He was right about that!)
As usual Theland, you sidestep the point I have raised, and flap your cloak of martyrdom about you.

I maintain that Peter Surcliffe is as valid a model for God and Christianity as you are, and I challenge you to argue that I am wrong.

That requires a rebuttal of my position with believable argument, not feeling sorry for yourself.
Andy, if Peter Sutcliffe heard voices, he should have compared what he was being told to what he was taught in the scriptures. They win every time.
Is that the best you can offer? A pat sidestep like that? The scriptures didn't say it?

He heard God telling him what to do, who says he didn't?
He heard a voice. Was it God? How would hr know?
By remembering that nothing must contravene the authority of scripture.
Theland - // He heard a voice. Was it God? How would hr know?

Hang on God, I know you are talking to me directly, I can hear you, but give me a minute while I check the manual to ensure that what you tell me to do is OK according to a book written by some men eons ago.

Yep, I'm sure God would be just thrilled with that as an option.

Why didn't Abraham ask God to hang on while he checked if it was OK for him to kill Isaac?
Abraham had faith that God would find a way through. And He did. God credited Abraham as s friend.
But back to Peter Sutcliffe.
Accept what I've said or continue to ridicule.
When we are tempted, it is never more then we can bear, and God provides a way out.
The authority of scripture remains the gold standard.
Nothing, nobody, not even an angel may override it.
Please don't waste your and my time with Peter Sutcliffe.
Theland, //nothing must contravene the authority of scripture. //

The scriptures contravene the 'authority of the scriptures' and I told you why. That you choose to ignore 'fact' - there's that word you're so fond of only this time it really means something - and throw a wobbly says much about your proclivity - or lack of it - for genuinely seeking truth.
Theland, //Abraham had faith that God would find a way through. And He did. //

Nonsense. God tormented Abraham cruelly. Just another of his little sick jokes.
To you yes.
You spend an inordinate amount of time attacking the God you font believe in.
Dont
You spend a fair amount of time attacking the science you don't believe in. We all have our failings.
Theland, if God told you to tie your son up and barbecue him, would you?
Theland - // But back to Peter Sutcliffe.
Accept what I've said or continue to ridicule. //

Again, the arrogance of the fervent, I must accept what you say because you say it, and that's it, like it or lump it.

// When we are tempted, it is never more then we can bear, and God provides a way out.
The authority of scripture remains the gold standard.
Nothing, nobody, not even an angel may override it. //

More Christian platitudes, more avoidance of the point I have raised.

// Please don't waste your and my time with Peter Sutcliffe. //

And there we are - you have an uncomfortable truth to deal with, so you deal with it by refusing to discuss it.

I repeat my point - Peter Sutcliffe has as much claim to be listening to God and carrying out his instructions as you, or anyone else - and if not, why did God not stop him?

Part of 'His Plan For Us All' which is another platitude to cover a multitude of misery which God allows unchecked.

You are wrong Theland, I am not ridiculing you, or your faith, I am simply pointing out another in an endless list of examples where you cannot provide an adequate explanation, so you resort to martyrdom, followed by huffing and puffing and not 'wasting your time'.

It wasn't wasting my time, I have got the response I expexted - again.

I see you not being able to explain, which is absolutely fine - but your failure to accept that is your failure to live with, not mine.

Peter Sutcliffe was a Christian believer in exactly the way that you are - you may not accept it, because is uncomfortable, but just because something is uncomfortable does not mean it is not the truth.
Oh, and Theland, since you are no longer 'wasting your time' with the difficult issue I have raised, maybe you can use some of that saved time to address Naomi's point about saving your child if God asked you to sacrifice him?
Andy, you say Peter Sutcliffe was Christian as I am.
I reject that.
So we both have our opinions. Both thinking each other wrong.
Theland - // Andy, you say Peter Sutcliffe was Christian as I am.

Yes, but the difference is, as usual, I have provided eviodence to back up my view, and as usual, you have not.
