Sir: The depressing article by Tom Woodman (‘You must be kidding’, 16 October) confirms my growing fears about the damage being wrought by the promoters of apocalyptic climate change, which has become a dangerous cult with alarming echoes of millenarian doom which has stretched through many previous centuries. While sensible care for the environment is a good thing, the descriptions of a frightening future of the imminent end of the world through drought, flood and fire now imbues every aspect of education and politics. Constantly bombarding young people with the news that the end of the world is nigh has led many of them into completely unnecessary visions of death and disaster.
Those convinced by the relentlessly gloomy outlook should try reading some of the opposite viewpoints instead, of which there are many. Those responsible for the propaganda should hang their heads in shame at what they have done and are doing to the mental welfare of younger generations.
There are many “opposing viewpoints” to the “doom and gloom” scenario.
Some are ostrich-like denials that the planet is warming up dangerously and some are propounding sensible solutions to the crisis.
I can’t be sure where these correspondents stand and therefore I am not sure how valid their point is. If they tend to the former camp then they are the ones who should hang their heads.
No one wants doom and gloom but I haven’t heard anyone say that doom and gloom is unavoidable.
Yep. I think there are enough serious scientific studies to show that it is the main cause, which of course is a reason to be cheerful in a way, because if it wasn't then there would be nothing we could do about it
Gromit //Carry on burning fossil fuels, waste resources, bury our junk in a big hole, and carry on regardless.//
I don't know of anyone who is advocating that; changes are being made for the better, but there are people with some very unpleasant agendas out there, & children are undoubtedly being indoctrinated with some distorted views of what is happening.
Why have you posted something of speculation Gromit?
Yes Khandro the Doctor makes an excellent point.
But whilst we have the Prime Minister and her husband at the help taxing us until the pips squeak, probably for some more wallpaper, things are not going to change.
First step for the UK is to remove the liberal Green Johnson and replace him with a proper Tory with Tory values.
Going 'green' does not have to break us. In fact done properly with the correct amount of time it would be a good thing. Not for so called man made climate change that relies on projections (And we all know how out they can be dont we Ferguson) but for tangible and measurable pollution.
Gromit: That link doesn't say anything much other than he was a founder member, whether he was actually at any time its 'president' is really immaterial & he didn't make the video, he was interviewed.
But what it doesn't do, & is typical of snopes, is address anything he has said or challenge any of his statistics.
snopes is also a disreputable site, run by disreputable people.
Is the planet warming up because of human activity? That's what we need to be sure of.
Yes, the science tells us its not the only factor but its an important one making a significant difference and its the one thing we can do something about- we cant change sunspots etc but we can stop pumping out polution and burning so much fossil fuel affecting CO2
for centuries the hoi polloi
were kept in check through fear of the devil
now we need something else to fear to keep us in check
no more cold war,
terrorism down,
global pandemics being scoffed at
The science tells you what you want hear unless you bother to read all sides. Which I can clearly see you havnt.
There is NO absolute truth it is derived from models that, as we have seen, are extremely unreliable and can be manipulated to tell the story you want. Especially if you want to scare people, which is the tactic being used yet again. There are scientists who disagree with these models but as usual with no going with the Agenda they are ignored or passed over when grants are dished out so they are in effect 'cancelled'.
//but we can stop pumping out pollution //
And you should have stopped there. Pollution is the item to fight on, there is no argument there.
Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain are not peddling propaganda. Their cause is genuine and based on a lot of science.
Their method of campaigning is the problem. It is self defeating and alienates many people who may have a bit of sympathy for environmental causes.
There are many environmental groups who are not extreme. But Greenpeace hardly ever get a mention these days, because the media is drawn to the guerrilla tactics of the extremists.
