As a symbol of God's love, he allowed his only son to suffer a common criminal's death, so that he could rise again, and show that all who believe in God will not die, but ascend into heaven, as Jesus did.
That in a seriously shortened form, is the eseence of Christian faith. Christians believe that Man is fundamentaly sinful but that if a man admits his sins and is sorry, the all-loving God will forgive him, and bring him into heaven.
The concept of 'God' is actually three parts - the Father, the Son (Jesus in human form and now in heaven at thr right hand of God The Father) and the Holy Spirit, who told of Jesus' coming to the Virgin Mary, and allowed her to give birth to him on earth.

So if Jesus is God, and God is the father of Jesus, that makes Jesus his own father. Where does that leave the Virgin Mary? Her baby was his own son?
The Christian church decrees that all men are born sinful. Tell me what sin a new born baby has committed. Medieval superstition created to instil fear and guilt in the common man and keep him in his place!

I never said it was logical naomi24 - that's what faith is, a belief in something that cannot be proved.
As I pointed out, the Christina concept of God is a three-part diety, Father (God) Son (Jesus) and Holy Ghost.
God sent his son to live on earth as a man, for which he had to be bron as a baby and live and grow to adulthood, to preach, and then to die for Man's sins.
God did not want to dishnour Mary, so he ensured that her virginity remained intact aftr the birth of Jesus.
Men are 'sinful' from birth onwards - that's just the way it is, if you are a Christian.

andy-hughes...so, God sacrificed himself, to himself, to save us from a hell that he made himself ? Strange God you got there.
And how can Jesus sit at the right hand side of a god that is omnipresent?
Fact is, christianity is based on pre-existing pagan religions. The idea of triune gods is pagan, gods becoming men to save mankind is pagan, virgin births of god-men are pagan. The entire new testament is steeped in the paganism which you despise.
You believe that jesus just ascended into heaven? he went up in the sky and past the clouds into the stratoshere and on into space until he reached "heaven"? Get real man.Did he not need oxygen in space?

Christianity cannot be dismissed as simply as some would wish, especially in just a few paragraphs.
The fact remains, that there are brilliant minds on either side of the believer / unbeliever divide, and have been for centuries. What are these people missing from each others arguments for and against belief?
It's worth investigating Christianity before dismissing it so quickly.

Once you accept the possibility of the existence of "God" you've already sold the farm and anything is possible.
Reason along with experience (wisdom) shows that before knowledge is possible an entity must first learn. In order to learn you must first have sensory organs with which to perceive reality and a brain with which to draw conclusions about that reality by using the reasoning attribute of an properly developed mind. Reality is not created by sensing non-existence. Existence is perceived by sensing that which already exists.
Religion is an attempt to turn reality on its head and claim that consciousness can be achieved prior to an existence to be conscious of and a means by which to conscious.
In reality existence comes first then consciousness then reason. Any attempt to reverse this necessary sequence is an attempt to reverse cause and effect and the inevitable consequence of this is an inability to grasp the essential nature of reality. Forfeiting causality leaves the mind without a compass or rudder to steer the process of rational thought leaving the ship to be driven by the whim of the wind and tide, soon to be overtaken and boarded by the pirates of the human spirit, the substitute spiritual leadership of the skippers of the non-existent God.

ok Theland, name one 'Brilliant Mind' that supports a literal translation of the bible.
According to the bible god sent jesus to atone for original sin. adam and eve disobeyed god and lost their innocence. This sin has been inherited by everybody. So we are all born sinners, not because of who we are, but because of adam and eve (who lived over 900 years by the way). So we are judged as sinners and subject to suffering and death unless we repent for adam and eve's sins through surrendering to jesus. If you do not repent through jesus you will suffer eternal damnation (you could be the nicest person on earth it doesn't count, you must go through jesus).
God had tried being god; sending plagues and literally commanding sacrifices and even wiping out most of humanity in a flood but man wasn't getting the message and it was getting out of hand (of course, god knew this would happen) eventually god showed man the way to live life through example by coming back as a man (jesus) (only god being god he still had to show off his powers through performing parlour tricks).
Of course, there is absolutely no evidence to back up this story but that doesn't stop people brainwashing their children before they have the opportunity to consider the matter rationally.
This is why creationists won't except evolution: because it is at odds with a literal translation of the bible.

Hello wizard69
It's not a strange God I've got anywhere, I am an atheist.
I simply explained the concept of Christianity is a few simple phrases - I do not personally believe in God, nor do i despise paganism, and my answer does not suggest that I do.
You have assumed that I am a Christian, and that I despise paganism - you are incorrect on both counts.
I can explain what Nazis believed was the Final Solution, but i am not a Nazi either.
Just setting the record straight.

Andy-hughes, you explain the concept of Christianity as you see it and say that God didn't want to dishonour Mary so he ensured her virginity remained intact after the birth of Jesus, but I have to ask how anyone can possibly know what God wanted? The church has made that up and sadly, gullible people believe it. If you really want to know how the Christian church as we know it began, check out the Councils of Nicea, Constantinople, Ephesus, Chalcedon and the second council at Constantinople, and in all that you'll find that men discussed what the rules and the doctrine ought to be, made the rules, and in my opinion, what the church teaches now couldn't be further from the teachings of Jesus. I imagine (and I can only imagine - wouldn't presume to know for sure), that if Jesus knew what had been propounded in his name, he wouldn't be too happy. The churches have done him a great disservice in promoting superstitious hocus pocus and I think it's incredibly sad. He said 'Love One Another' and that's all we need.
religion isnt blind faith, there is proof all around us,
for those who try and prove god is non existant,
the chance of this world coming to what it is from nothing, has the same chance as a bomb blowing up in a junk yard and you ending up with a 747 jumbo jet,
each and every cell in our body has its own function, it is a unique design, there has to be a designer
you cant sit in front of scrap and hope it becomes a robot, you have to make it
and as for the "god is a concept of 3",
its funny that was never in the original bibles, instead was later added, then in between removed again, then re-added
i mean, why is it when you read bible reviews you come accross things like...the closest to the original...
i dont want the closest one! i want to see the original

Hi Madgaf - I would agree with you regards the extreme improbability of evolution. Some scientists themselves had calculated the probabilty of life coming about by random processes was 1 in 10 to the power of 40000 !
Where had you read that God described as the three Persons in the Trinity was not in the Bible ?

Hi Naomi24 - I would agree with you that today what churches teach is far removed from what Jesus taught.
The Roman Catholic church over the centuries has basically formed a different religion from that of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Masses, confessing to priests, rosaries, worship of Mary, etc, none of these things are found in the Bible but yet that's what a lot of the world thinks Christianity is about.
We need to get back to the Bible.
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Romans 5:1
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." I Timothy 2:5

Jesus is NOT Almighty God. Jesus is God's son.
.............Jesus agrees totally with everything his Father in heaven does.
Jesus was created by his Father. Proverbs 8; 22-31
this supports (John 1:10) He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him, but the world did not know him.
Jesus was already created when the world was created.,
(John 1:14) So the Word became flesh and resided among us, and we had a view of his glory, a glory such as belongs to an only-begotten son from a father; and he was full of undeserved kindness and truth.
(John 1:2) This one was in [the] beginning with God.
Jesus was WITH [ alongside] God.
(John 1:18) No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten god who is in the bosom [position] with the Father is the one that has explained him.
Jesus is a 'god', a spiritual being, just like Satan is a 'god'
(2 Corinthians 4:4) among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.
(John 3:16) For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.
there is always a separation between Father and son.
