I think they become a bride of Christ when they take their final vows.

My aunt is a nun, although she is not cloistered and is now more a religious sister than a nun. She is indeed a �bride of christ� and her commitment to the Holy Orders of poverty, chastity and obedience is to God. Some say they are married to Jesus, some to God and others the Church.

As she sees it, the point of religious life is to become one with Jesus Christ, just as husband and wife become one in their married life. One with him in love. One with him when united to the ones he loves. And so the whole life is oriented towards making that union possible: by receiving Christ everyday at Mass.
