The world is full of death and destruction,War and poverty. A 100,000 children die every year in Sri Lanka alone, just because there is no iodine in the salt...half a million people lost their lives in the Tsunami....There are murderers and paedophiles that live amongst us.....My friends son who was four years old lost his life 2 years ago to a brain haemorage,my own family lost my nephew of 5 years old after he was Run over outside the church he had spent all day in with his Grandfather(an earlier question of mine)..the holocaust....6 milllion Jews, men women and children..WHY...the list is endless Naomi...Dont get me wrong i believe there is a God...i just want to kick the **** out of him when i meet....let him or her feel heart breaking, gut wrenching pain....:)
Hi Stevie, a lot of what you describe - war, poverty, the holocaust - can be attributed to man's cruelty, greed, selfishness, arrogance and his insatiable hunger for power. However, much of it cannot, and although I don't believe the god of the bible was really the almighty, I too wonder how those who believe in him, and profess to love him explain his cruelty and blindly accept his vicious nature. How can anyone love such a creature? According to the bible, he's always been murderous, jealous, egotistical and sadistic.

Your right Naomi, the way i see it most religous folk(my ma and pa)say he sees and controls all,so all the afore mentioned occurances are his fault, because he created man(apparently) i am not a violent person, but it just makes me angry, you see all these Religous people bigging him all the time,my mum and dad say that i'l pay for my sins when i cark it,id rather sort em out now :)
It is argued that the problems of the world - war, violence, child molesting, etc. - are the work of people who have turned away from God.
Romeo, I've heard that argument, but the biblical god doesn't appear to be a great role model. Perhaps those who commit some of the atrocities in this world are emulating him? Just a thought.
Quite, I mean if you say all the good things that happen are down to God and all the bad things are down to man - and yet God made man.

That's a bit like saying "It wasn't me that hacked into your bank and stole all your money it was my computer"

We then get into the argument where someone says "Ah but man has free will"

And I say " God could still give us free will without suffering - that is after all promised in heaven"

and at some point somebody will say something deep and meaningfull like "Man cannot conceive the purposes of God"

Which is basically intellectual surrender

tonyted, maybe we're not doing so good - and I'm sure we're not - but would you attribute what we define as 'natural disasters' , such as the Tsunami, to man - and if so, how? I can concede that due to his greed, and to his shame, man is totally and utterly responsible for the horrific plight of people in such places as Ethiopia, and I can concede that man is completely and utterly responsible for the holocaust, but man has no hand in, and no control over, disasters such as the Tsunami, does he? Where is this great love that we are promised by the church? To my mind it simply doesn't exist. It's the greatest lie ever told.

Thanks tonyted. To me, it's just simple logic.
Never mind about God.
Just do your bit for the world and live a good life then whether he meets you at the Pearly Gates or not, you've got nothing to reproach yourself for.
And if he does meet you, keep your guard up 'cos he'll have a better punch than you. He's God.
(Hi Naomi - just keeping awake until it's time to get my coat. Sorry for the hi-jack Stevie. You can punch me if you like!)

Spot on Naomi, with your permission i shall use that in future debates with the door to door religion on a plate salesmen!!!

No worries Mammar,,i suppose everything just boils down to that ' whats it all about Alfie' question !!
If God is so perfect, how come he gave up with his chosen people and started a new religion?
It's all bunkum.
I'm living by that credo Stevie and if he's really there to meet me I shall be most surprised and I'll not tip him off that you're mad at him so he can't get his bouncers ready for you

My privilege Stevie.

Mammar, hello, how are you? In my opinion, you have the secret of a happy life spot on.

Sorry to interrupt the thread - and please, Stevie, forgive Mammar and me for a moment, but what an exciting night we're in for with the release of the last Harry Potter book. Yeessssss!!!! My ambition in life has been to read the final instalment!! So pleased nothing ghastly happened to make me die before that!! :o)
Panic, the simple fact is that the god of the bible didn't start a new religion - arrogant man started a new religion.

Mammar, see you there - but it's not going to be where the church would have you believe it is. Nevertheless, all will be well, I'm convinced of that.
Me, too.
I shall have the kettle on to meet all you AB'ers.
Gotta go - coat time!

P.S. If there's another flood, it'll by my fault for reading HP
Mammar, as an avid Harry Potter fan, I''ll share the blame with you, and I look forward to joining you for a cup of tea.
