Can some one clear up....

If the jews didn't eat pork can some one tell me why they were kept at all?
I can't think of any other reason for them being kept as we don't use their milk or skin unless it's used for leather.
I know that they were kept in biblical times as they are mention several times in the bible.

According to Jewish Myths and Legends, (one version), the Pig was created by God to clear up, eat, all the droppings from the other animals and humans, and left over food on the Ark. (the Pig is omnivorous).
In reality, there were no Kosher laws prior to the book of Leviticus, so its possible that until then, jews ate Pork.
There's some evidence also, in the New Testament, that Jewish businessmen kept pigs, although whether for eating or selling, it doesn't say.
This doesn't actuallyanswer your question, but i'll be watching for other replies, I might learn something.

Muslims won't eat it either.
Perhaps it has something to do with pork being a dangerous meat if not fresh or refrigerated, and they originate from hot countries.
This possibly got 'translated' into a religious reason not to eat it.
Us northern countries don't have such problems, as it's so bleedin' freezing here.

As far as I can think of Lonnie is right and it is true that pigs are cleaners. They will eat any thing.

I think that wild boar and pork were one of the main ingredients of your average Roman cookery class for many centuries, so they would have remained useful for their flesh and thus kept in swineherds, as Naomi has said by many other groups.
I would guess given the Romans in occupation of Judea, that although were content to let the Jews live as they did and thought that the no pork rule and circumcision were odd, would have kept pigs and maybe even paid jewish farmers to keep pigs. Even though this was also against their religion, it would make sense to retain some trade links with the occupying forces. Wasn�t the father of the prodigal son a pig farmer?

Nice story Quinlad - But I do wonder if they spoke English at that time as Due, Ian, Christ are mainly English words. Or I might be wrong.

I was questioning why the Hebrews kept them.
If they didn't eat them as Pigs have very few uses otherwise.

I do understand that there were medical reasons for it not to be eaten. This is one of the reasons why I asked as to why they were kept at all.
Keyplus: those who fight the hardest and talk the most are those who feel unsure of the reason why they fight.
I am sure of what I believe although sometimes I do question it. But if you don't you can't fully understand it.
