Kept coming across this abbreviation in this section and was going to ask what it meant.
But it suddenly came to me - peace be upon him.
So now my questions are -
What on earth does it mean?
Why do people use it?
What will happen to them if they don't say it?
P.S. I suppose religious folk would say that my flash of inspiration was caused by God telling me!

First of all I would like to correct what Naomi said. Their Prophets. Muslims believe in all of the prophets from Adam to Muhammad and all in between, likes of Jesus, Moses, David and so on. Where Jews do not believe in Jesus or Muhammad and Christians do not believe in Muhammad. Muslims believe that there were around 125K messengers sent by God, I think only 25 have been mentioned by name in Quran. May Peace and blessing of God be upon them all.
PBUH, as said peace be upon him, for a single messenger or prophet and peace be upon them all when we talk about more than one.
Why do Muslims say that? Good question. It is the same word Muslims say when they greet each other on daily basis. In Arabic (Asslamu Alaikum). It is the same way Jesus (pbuh) used to greet people (it is even in the bible). We believe that all the prophets hear that as living people do and reply to that saying peace be upon you too. Same as a Muslim will reply in day to day life (Wa Alaikum Asslam). So in simple words its not only a greeting but a prayer also. And then you do not have to look at the clock before saying it as is the case in Good morning, Good noon, Good after noon etc.

Keyplus, I'm not entirely sure that the Jews and Christians acknowledge all the prophets that Islam acknowledges, but certainly neither of those religions consider Jesus or Mohammed to be prophets, so in describing them as 'their' prophets (referring to Islam), I was accurate. They aren't anyone elses, that's for sure.
So,if I understand correctly, Muslims believe that invisible men, living in the sky, listen to every word spoken by every Muslim every second of every day to ensure that they say "peace be upon him" after every single mention of his (or her) name.

Willowman � There are so many things that will not make sense if you would only see those scientifically. Can you prove love and hate scientifically? Scientifically earth was flat only until about couple of hundred years ago. Scientifically Sun was stationary, or may be still is as I am not scientist and do not know what scientific stance is in this regard. Science did not know about uniqueness of DNA or finger prints until very recent time. Science did not know that human skin has pain receptors. All these things were written in Quran 1429 years ago.
Science still does not believe in life on other planets, angels, hell, paradise, and God. One day they will, but for few it might be too late.
But any way that is altogether a different subject.

'Qaddarahu', translated as 'proportioned', comes from the Arabic verb 'qadare', translated as 'arranging, setting out, planning, programming, seeing the future, the writing of everything in destiny'. The earlier Bible contained exactly notions of sperm being a seed, so this is hardly unique to the Quran, and both are based in the erroneus understanding that the seed was planted in the woman's belly only in order to grow, not to be a carrier of half the genes of a new person. Had you thought in the beginning about what you mentioned right at the end then it would have saved a lot of time and effort. So due to that fact I will not go into too much detail as well known scientists have agreed with Quran. So here to refresh your memory. I know we have spoke about embryo before and I remember you mentioning about Greeks knowing about it and possible copy from there. Did he copy word to word including the proven mistakes of the Greeks or he only copied correct ones? He must have been a clever man to have copied only what would be proved 1400 years after. Of course I have applied critical approach to Quran, my own life and everything around me, as well as other religious books. I did have my doubts at time but looking for the questions sincerely helped me and I did find logical answers. I am always looking for answers for or against and I can only say that I have an open mind and I do analyze every thing.
I am not shutting my eyes and just believing in every thing. That is another beauty of Quran that it encourages people to learn and gain more knowledge about every thing and not only religious knowledge.
