A lot of people I know went to catholic schools so were, therefore, educated by nuns.

The vast majority have said that nuns were, in the main, harsh, abusive & excessively strict.

What are Abers experiences of the above?

Watch the film, "The Magdalene Sisters," and google Magdelene Laundries.

Typical nuns, and typical R.C.ism given the freedom to spread it's evil.
I don't have personal experience of Catholic school, but I know several people who have, and who would agree with you MWB. Having said that, when I was in labour surrounded by efficient medical staff, the only person I felt actually cared about me and the pain I was in, was a nun, and I will be eternally grateful to her.
My mum had to stay in a convent orphanage during WWII. She did not have one good thing to say about the nuns and the 'car' that she and her little brother were given. She actually said that the nuns were twisted and evil.

My SIL went to a catholic school and she doesn't have a bad thing to say about the experience (apart from the usual moans about school).

My niece (SIL's daughter) has gone to a catholic school as it is the best school in the area. My niece loves the school apart from the fact that they make her eat her vegetables!

l went to a catholic school was daydreaming about a beautiful tree outside in the playground l was only 7 years old a nun who was watching me came up and wacked me on the back of the hand with a ruler and said to me : girl why are you having unpure thoughts : needless to say l did'nt know what a unpure thought was .

My experience of going to a catholic school and educated by nuns was harsh and excessively strict...but not abusive.

There were one or two who were really nice, but on the whole they were very strict, controlling, and money oriented.

We did have many laughs tho, trying to outsmart them....lol lol
I was just looking through some of the old posts and came across this MWB. I just wanted to say I went to a convent and it was wonderful. If you ever get to see a play called 'Once a Catholic', it's a comedy but reminded me so much of my time there. Don't get me wrong there were a couple of horrible nuns, who would whip the hat pin out of their wimpole and stab you in the back of the hand if they thought you were'nt paying attention, or smack with a ruler but on the whole they were fantastic, it was the best education any child could have. Just to make you laugh we had one nun Sister Jackie (she was young), I told her I wanted to be a nun (I was about 14-15), she told me to come back and say that after I'd discovered boys and then she would take me seriously...she obviously knew me very well...I didn't go back to be a nun! The one abiding lesson I learned from them is that you cannot love anyone unless you love yourself first!
